What is the best way to measure the space to fit a bed in?
Measure both the width and the depth of the space where you'd like to put a bed. The easiest way is to use a measuring tape. Hold the start of the tape down at the edge of the area, and let it run to the other edge. If the distance is larger than what you can stretch to with your arms, ask a friend to assist, or divide what you need to measure up into multiple parts. You can do this by either holding the tape down partway through and continuing running it while letting the first end go, or by marking how far you have measured on the floor or wall, and start a new measurement. If you want to avoid drawing on your floor, you can position a pointy object like a screwdriver there instead. Make sure to avoid dead places where the piece of furniture won't go like skirting boards. Also it may be necessary to take the height of the space and the item into account wherever the ceiling is low like in loft rooms.

How much free space does one need around the bed?
The bed is the main furniture in a bedroom, but one needs some space around it to access it. But how much? One will need about 75-90 cm extra space either side of the bed as well as at the foot, with the more space corresponding to more luxurious arrangements. This means that for a 180 cm wide bed, you would need a 330 cm wide space. However, you can save space by pushing the bed against the wall on one side, especially if the bed is only used by one person. This can create a cozy corner, and would reduce the space needed by a 180 cm wide bed to about 255 cm in width. Placing beds under sloping ceilings is also ideal as often these spaces would be hard to use, but the height of the space should not be so low that it leads to regular annoyance or head injuries. Opting for a sofa bed can also be a space-saving option.

From the history of furniture: The history of beds

The idea of entirely covering the wood-work with material died out soon after the end of Queen Anne's reign, and many fine examples of 18th-century beds are in existence.

Fig. 4 is typical of the Chippendale period.

4. Mahogany Four-poster Bedstead. The posts are fluted for part of their height and rest upon cabriole legs. Chippendale Period. About Middle of 18th Century.

Beds, however, were not exclusively of the four-poster type. The form illustrated in Fig. 2 was continued in the 18th century, the cabriole leg being generally used in the Queen Anne period, and having a projecting portion surmounting the front legs somewhat similar in design to an inverted cabriole leg minus the foot. The back was generally shaped with a series of round, hollow and ogee motifs of the usual Queen Anne character, the edge being moulded and the centre space either veneered or covered with material. Fig. 5 is a further example of an 18th century bed, and is of the Chinese-Chippendale style. The tester is in the form of a Chinese pagoda, the corner ribs of which are decorated with acanthus leafage. The bed is lacquered, a treatment which was still to a certain extent continued from the Queen Anne period.

5. Four-poster Bed in the Chinese Chippendale style, decorated with lacquer. Chippendale Period. About 1760.

Towards the end of the century the beds were designed on a lighter scale, especially in the treatment of the posts and the tester. Fig. 6 is typical of the latter half of the 18th century. The shaped cornice moulding is decorated with the small pear-drop pendants usually associated with Hepplewhite. The back is covered with material.

Questions and answers

How to use color psychology when choosing a bed?

The color scheme in your home can be a bit accidental, but it has considerable effect on the feelings you get from your home. The two main things to consider for everything color is balance and associations. Balance simply means that the colors in your home should ideally be coordinated in some way, so that it looks like a unit instead of a random collection of elements. This can be achieved by using a color wheel, and choosing colors that are either quite close to each other (colors that are only different in lightness or intensity do go together, but small variations in the actual tone can also work), or quite far, like on opposite sides of the wheel (complementary colors like red and green). Associations with and emotions connected to colors are equally important. In all likelihood these emotions are cultural and learnt, which means that they can be very different in different cultures or just for different people. The associations can even be contradictory, making it even more difficult to use them as a guide. Blue is often associated with productivity, but also stability, calmness and even sadness. Green is clearly the color of nature, and is said to evoke safety, luck and envy (though in other cultures this latter is yellow). Pink is said to evoke kindness, nurturing, romance and calmness, while it was the masculine color of choice for clothing over many decades. Red is regarded as the color of friendship, energy, leadership, desire and revenge, which is a very wide range of emotions. But it is clear that in nature, it means danger and importance, so you probably need to put it next to a calm color to allow the eye to rest. These associations point in so many different directions that these guides seem to boil down to just one piece of advice: pause and think what the color means for you.

Is it possible to search for beds using their size?

Finding beds in search engines on the web by measurements is not straightforward as search engines are best at finding text only. Also, when searching for beds to fit a given space, a bit shallower pieces would also be suitable. Even if some outlets allow searching for beds by size, searching many webshops at the same time needs a different solution. This is where Furniture Ferret comes to the rescue. We scan many shops on the web and list tens of thousands of products so you are able to get the one that fits perfectly.

Our philosophy

We strive to allow every one of us to live comfortably even if they only own a small area they call home. We scour the Internet to search among thousands of desks, cabinets, shelves, storage units, beds, tables, sofas and more by size, to find just the right one for you to go in that unused corner and turn it into some closet space, or to find that extra long sofa that is still narrow enough to squeeze through the door. From the kitchen to the bathroom, don't live around furniture - buy furniture that lives with you.

Did you know? We are also present in many other regions. You can visit 68 inch long beds in Canada, 175 cm long beds in Ireland, 68 inch long beds in the US or 175 cm long beds in the UK.
