How much free space should one leave around the bed?
The focal point of any bedroom is the bed, but you need some space around it to use it. But how much exactly? You will need about 75-90 cm extra space either side of the bed as well as at its foot, with the more space for more relaxed set-ups. In other words, for a 240 cm wide bed, you need a 390 cm wide space. However, you can save space by placing the bed against the wall on one side, especially if the bed is only used by one person. This can create a cozy corner, and decreases the space needed by a 240 cm wide bed to about 315 cm in width. Creating an arrangement with the bed under lower ceilings is also ideal as these spaces would be hard to utilise, but the height of the ceiling should not be so low that it causes regular annoyance or head injuries when getting into or out of the bed. Opting for a sofa bed can also be a space-saving option.
What is a reasonable price for a bed?
854.26 Australian dollars is the average price of beds in this section. You can check whether an item you like is overpriced or underpriced by comparing it to the median price. The median price is $1,049 which means that exactly half of the beds costs more and half costs less. Most of the beds that match your search are priced between $279 and 1,299 Australian dollars. This means that 9/10 of the products are between the two figures.
From the history of furniture: The history of beds

3. Four-poster Bed with hangings. The feet are scrolled and the canopy is surmounted by plumes of feathers. Queen Anne Period; Early 18th Century.

The idea of entirely covering the wood-work with material died out soon after the end of Queen Anne's reign, and many fine examples of 18th-century beds are in existence.

Fig. 4 is typical of the Chippendale period.

4. Mahogany Four-poster Bedstead. The posts are fluted for part of their height and rest upon cabriole legs. Chippendale Period. About Middle of 18th Century.

Beds, however, were not exclusively of the four-poster type. The form illustrated in Fig. 2 was continued in the 18th century, the cabriole leg being generally used in the Queen Anne period, and having a projecting portion surmounting the front legs somewhat similar in design to an inverted cabriole leg minus the foot. The back was generally shaped with a series of round, hollow and ogee motifs of the usual Queen Anne character, the edge being moulded and the centre space either veneered or covered with material. Fig. 5 is a further example of an 18th century bed, and is of the Chinese-Chippendale style. The tester is in the form of a Chinese pagoda, the corner ribs of which are decorated with acanthus leafage. The bed is lacquered, a treatment which was still to a certain extent continued from the Queen Anne period.

5. Four-poster Bed in the Chinese Chippendale style, decorated with lacquer. Chippendale Period. About 1760.

Questions and answers

How to choose the best color for a bed?

If you can choose between different colors for a bed that fits your space, it is useful to know what the effects of the different colors are. The two main things to consider for everything color is balance and associations. Balance means that the colors in your room should ideally be coordinated in some way, so that it looks like a unit, and not just a random collection of elements. This can be achieved by using a color wheel, and selecting colors that are either quite close to each other (as colors that are only different in intensity of lightness do go together, but slight differences in the actual tone can also work), or quite far, like on different halves of the wheel (giving you complementary colors like blue and yellow) or on different thirds (for example, cyan-orange-purple). Associations with and emotions connected to colors are equally important to keep in mind. In all likelihood these emotions are cultural and learnt, which means that they can be very different in different cultures or just for different individuals. The associations are even often contradictory, which makes it even more difficult to use them as a guide. Blue is often associated with productivity, but also stability, calmness and even sadness. Green is undoubtedly the color of nature, and is said to be associated with safety, luck and envy (though in other cultures envy is yellow). Pink is said to bring kindness, nurturing, romance and calmness, but it was the choice for boys' and men's clothes over many decades. Red is considered to be the color of friendship, willpower, leadership, desire and anger - a very wide range of feelings. But it is clear that in nature, it signals danger or importance, so it should be put next to a calm color to allow the eye to rest. These associations are so varied that these guides seem to boil down to just one piece of advice: pause and see what the color means for you.

How to measure the space to fit a bed in?

Measure the width and the depth of the floor area where you'd like to place a bed. The most accurate way is to use a measuring tape. Hold the start of the tape down at the edge of the area, and let it run to the other edge. Make sure the tape is not diagonal, or else you get a value larger than the reality. If the distance is larger than what you can stretch to, ask a friend for help, or split what you need to measure into multiple parts. This can be done by either holding the tape down halfway and continuing running it while letting the first end go, or by marking how far you measured on the floor or wall, and reposition the tape to complete the measurement. If you want to avoid drawing on your floor, try putting down a pointy object like a screwdriver there. Don't forget to avoid dead places where the piece of furniture won't go like skirting boards. Also don't forget to take the height of the space and the item into account wherever the ceiling is low like in loft rooms.

Our philosophy

We want to allow every one of us to live comfortably even if they only own a small area they call home. We search the Internet for thousands of desks, cabinets, shelves, storage units, beds, tables, sofas and more by size, to find just the right piece for you to go in that unused corner and turn it into some closet space, or to find that extra long sofa that is still narrow enough to squeeze through the door. From the kitchen to the living room, don't live around furniture - get furniture that lives with you.

We are also present in many other regions. You can look for 95 inch wide beds in the US, 240 cm wide beds in Ireland, 95 inch wide beds in Canada or 240 cm wide beds in the UK.
