How to measure the space to fit a stool in?

Furniture Ferret: Measure both the width and the depth of the floor space where you'd like to put a stool. The most accurate way is to use a measuring tape. Hold the beginning of the tape down at the edge of the area, and let it run to the opposite edge. Make sure the tape is parallel to the side of the space, or else you would overestimate the available space. If the distance is larger than what you can stretch to with your arms, ask a friend to assist, or divide what you need to measure into multiple parts. You can do this by either holding the tape down partway through and continuing running it while letting the first end go, or by marking how far you measured on the floor or wall, and reposition the tape to complete the measurement. If you would not like to draw on your floor, you can position a pointy object like a pen there. You should avoid dead places where the piece of furniture won't go like decorative strips. Also don't forget to take the height of the space and the item into account wherever the ceiling is uneven like in loft rooms.

How can one coordinate colors?

Furniture Ferret: The color scheme in one's room can be a bit accidental, but it has a great effect on how you feel in your home. The two main things to consider when it comes to colors is balance and associations. Balance means that the colors in one's room should ideally be coordinated, so that it looks like a unit instead of a random collection of elements. This can be achieved by using a color wheel, and going for colors that are either quite close to each other, or relatively far, like on opposite sides of the wheel (complementary colors like blue and yellow) or on different thirds (for example, red-green-blue). Other color combinations are likely be somewhat jarring because of how our eyes and brains process color. Associations with and emotions connected to colors are also important to keep in mind, and there are many lists for these from those by 19th-century Impressionist painters to modern interior design guides. In all likelihood these associations are cultural and learnt, which means that they can be very different in different cultures or just for different people. The associations are even often contradictory, making it even more difficult to use them as a guide. Blue is often connected to productivity, but also calmness, stability and even sadness. Green is undoubtedly the color of nature, and is considered to be associated with safety, luck and envy (though in other cultures envy is yellow instead). Pink is said to evoke kindness, nurturing, romance and calmness, while it was the masculine color of choice for clothing over many decades. Red is considered to be the color of friendship, willpower, leadership, desire and anger, which is a very wide range of emotions. But it is clear that in nature, it means danger and importance, so you probably need to put it next to a calm color to allow the eye to rest. These emotions are so varied that these guidelines seem to boil down to just one piece of advice: pause and think what the color means for you.

From the history of furniture: Chairs and sofas Part 1

Sir James Ware, who lived from 1594 to 1666, writing about this same stone which is set in the Coronation Chair, says:

"Nor ought we to pass by unmentioned that fatal stone, antiently called liafail, brought into Ireland by the Tuath-de-Danans, and from thence in the reign of Moriertach Mac Ere sent into Argile to his brother Fergus, but which was afterwards inclosed in a wooden chair by King Keneth to serve in the coronation solemnities of the King of Scotland, and deposited in the Monastery of Scone, from whence it was at length removed to Westminster by Edward I. Wonderful things are reported of this stone, but what credibility they deserve I leave to the judgement of others. In particular fame reports, that in times of heathenism before the birth of Christ, he only was confirmed Monarch of Ireland, under whom, being placed upon it, this stone groaned or spoke, according to the Book of Hoath."

One can imagine what grief it caused to Ireland when this sacred stone, endeared by a thousand superstitious ideas, was removed and taken to England.

If you will hunt among old documents, both in this country and in England, you will find frequent mention of "joint stools." I could give many extracts from old wills which specify these stools, and I show one in Figure 64. The cradle does not properly be long in this article, but when I reflected how often a weary mother had sat on that same joint stool and rocked that cradle, I let it stay. It must have been in pretty constant operation in some of those pioneer families, where twelve children were an ordinary num ber, and twenty not very unusual! Such a cradle and such a stool, no doubt, found their way Over in many of the earliest lots of household gear, since, though these patterns were found by 1560, they were made till a century later, and when once part of the house hold goods of a family, descended till they fairly gave out from excessive wear.
