Questions and answers

How do I use the search on Furniture Ferret?

Searching for benches on Furniture Ferret is simple. Click on the search button at the right of the header, then enter any keywords you are looking for, like "table", "shoe storage" or "yellow sofa". Use the sliders to enter the highest and lowest values for the width, height and depth (length) and the price you are looking for. Tap "Go!" to see all matching items. That's all!

How can I choose a color for a bench?

The color scheme in one's room can be a result of necessity, but it has a great effect on the feelings you get from your space. The two main things to consider when it comes to colors is balance and associations. Balance simply means that the colors in your space should be coordinated, so that it looks like a unit instead of a random collection of elements. This can be achieved by using a color wheel, and choosing colors that are either quite close to each other (as colors that are only different in intensity of lightness always go together, but small differences in hue can also work), or quite far or on different thirds (for example, red-green-blue). Associations with and emotions connected to colors are equally important, and there are many lists for these from those by 19th-century Impressionist painters to modern interior design guides. In all likelihood these associations are cultural and learnt, which means that they can be quite different in different cultures or for different people. The associations can even be contradictory, making it even more difficult to use them as a guide. Blue is often connected to productivity, but also calmness, stability and even sadness. Green is clearly the color of nature, and is considered to evoke safety, luck and envy (though in other cultures this latter is yellow instead). Yellow is always a shouty color and can mean warmth, brightness, attention and energy (likely evoking the sun), except when it is dark and becomes brown, when it is said to be relaxing and comfortable. Red is regarded as the color of friendship, energy, leadership, desire and anger, which is a very wide range of emotions. But it is clear that in nature, it means danger or importance, so you probably need to put it next to a neutral color to allow the brain to rest. These emotions are so different that these guidelines all seem to boil down to just one piece of advice: pause and consider what the color means for you.

From the history of furniture: The history of chairs

Another style used by Chippendale was Gothic. The influence is particularly noticeable in the treatment of the splat, which is pierced in the form of Gothic tracery, as in Fig. 12.

12. Gothic Chippendale Chair with pierced splat and square legs. (Mahogany.) Middle 18th Century.

A great many chairs were also treated in the Chinese style, this being easily identified by the introduction of lattice work and often carved imitations of the Chinese pagoda.

Another notable designer of the 18th century was Hepplewhite. His chairs were invariably graceful and refined. The backs were, as a rule, either shield-shaped, as in Fig. 13, or oval, and the top rail "humped," as shown in the illustration.

13. Shield-back Chair with serpentine shaped front rail. Hepplewhite. (Mahogany.) Second half of 18th Century.

An Adam chair of the wheel-back variety is shown in Fig. 14. Robert Adam's work was classical in its treatment and indicates his profession as an architect. His designs were carried out by contemporary craftsmen, and it is interesting to observe how his work was affected by the methods of treatment employed by them.

14. Wheel - back Chair with semi-rounded seat. Adam. (Mahogany.) Second half of 18th Century.

Sheraton's chair designs are innumerable. Figs. 15 and 16 are typical of his work. His designs were extremely light, and usually carried out in satinwood or mahogany. The legs were either square tapered or turned or, in some cases, toward the end of the period, curved inwards to the back. In some of his pieces the legs were made to project above the seat and were rounded over.

Our philosophy

We aim to allow everyone to live comfortably even if they only have a small area they call home. We search the Internet for thousands of desks, cabinets, shelves, shoe cabinets, beds, sofas and so on by size and color, to find just the right one for you to go in that unused corner and turn it into some closet space, or to find that extra long bed that is still narrow enough to squeeze through the door. From the hall to the bathroom, don't live around furniture - get furniture that lives with you.

Have you heard? We also help customers in many other countries. You can look for 28 inch deep benches in the US, 70cm deep benches in the UK or 70cm deep benches in Ireland.
