What is the best way to measure the space to fit a bench in?

Measure the width and the depth of the space where you'd like to put a bench. The easiest way is to use a measuring tape. Hold the start of the tape down at the edge of the area, and let it run to the opposite edge. If the distance is larger than what you can stretch to with your arms, ask someone else to help, or divide what you need to measure into multiple parts. This can be done by either holding the tape down partway through and continuing running it while letting the first end go, or by marking how far you measured on the floor or wall, and reposition the tape to complete the measurement. If you would not like to make a mark on your floor, try putting down a pointy object like a screwdriver there. Don't forget to avoid dead places where the piece of furniture won't be able to go like skirting boards. Also it may be necessary to measure how high the space is wherever the ceiling is low like in loft rooms.

Questions and answers

How can one coordinate colors?

If you can choose between different colors for a bench that fits your space and budget, it is helpful to know what the effects of the different colors are. The two main things to consider when it comes to colors is balance and associations. Balance means that the colors in your home should be coordinated in some way, so that the room looks like a unit. Usual techniques to achieve this are considering a color wheel, and selecting colors that are either quite close to each other (colors that are only different in lightness or intensity always go together, but small variations in tone can also be fine), or relatively far. Other color combinations are likely be somewhat jarring just based on how our eyes and brains understand color. Associations with and emotions connected to colors are equally important, and there is no shortage of guides for these from those by 19th-century Impressionist painters to modern interior design guides. In all likelihood these emotions are cultural and learnt, which means that they can be quite different for different individuals. Blue is often associated with productivity, but also stability, calmness and even sadness. Green is clearly the color of nature, and is said to be associated with safety, luck and envy (though in other cultures this latter is yellow). Pink is thought to evoke kindness, romance, nurturing and calmness, but it was the masculine color of choice for clothing over many decades. Red is considered to be the color of friendship, willpower, leadership, desire and revenge, which is a very wide range of feelings. But it is clear that in nature, it signals danger or importance, so you probably need to put it next to a neutral color to allow the brain to rest. These associations point in so many directions that these guides all seem to boil down to just this: pause and think what the color means for you.

Is it possible to find benches by width, height and length?

Finding benches in search engines on the Internet by measurements is difficult as search engines are best at finding text only. Also, when searching for benches to fit a given space, a bit smaller items would also suit. Even if some shops allow searching for benches by measurements, checking many outlets at the same time needs a different solution. Furniture Ferret to the rescue! We scan many shops on the web and list tens of thousands of products to allow you to buy the one that is just perfect.

From the history of furniture: The history of chairs

In many of his early chairs Chippendale used the rounded back and drew inspiration from many other Queen Anne motifs. Much of his work also shows French influence. The example illustrated in Fig. 11 is one of his famous rib and-back designs, in which it will be seen that the urn shape has completely disappeared from the splat.

11. Riband-back Chippendale Chair with cabriole legs, carved in the form of acanthus leafage. (Mahogany.) Middle 18th Century.

Another style used by Chippendale was Gothic. The influence is particularly noticeable in the treatment of the splat, which is pierced in the form of Gothic tracery, as in Fig. 12.

12. Gothic Chippendale Chair with pierced splat and square legs. (Mahogany.) Middle 18th Century.

A great many chairs were also treated in the Chinese style, this being easily identified by the introduction of lattice work and often carved imitations of the Chinese pagoda.

Another notable designer of the 18th century was Hepplewhite. His chairs were invariably graceful and refined. The backs were, as a rule, either shield-shaped, as in Fig. 13, or oval, and the top rail "humped," as shown in the illustration.

13. Shield-back Chair with serpentine shaped front rail. Hepplewhite. (Mahogany.) Second half of 18th Century.

An Adam chair of the wheel-back variety is shown in Fig. 14. Robert Adam's work was classical in its treatment and indicates his profession as an architect. His designs were carried out by contemporary craftsmen, and it is interesting to observe how his work was affected by the methods of treatment employed by them.
