Questions and answers

How to choose a color for a cabinet?

If you have the option to choose from different colors for a cabinet that fits your space, it is useful to know what the effects of the different colors are. The two things to consider when it comes to colors is balance and associations. Balance simply means that the colors in your space should ideally be coordinated in some way, so that the space looks like a unit, and not just a random collection of elements. This can be achieved by using a color wheel, and going for colors that are either quite close to each other, or relatively far or on different thirds (for example, red-green-blue). Associations with and emotions connected to colors are equally important to keep in mind, and there are many lists for these from those by 19th-century Impressionist painters to modern interior design guides. In all likelihood these associations are cultural and learnt, which means that they can be very different in different cultures or just for different individuals. Blue is often associated with productivity, but also stability, calmness and even sadness. Green is undoubtedly the color of nature, and is considered to be connected to safety, luck and envy (though in other cultures this latter is yellow instead). White can be connected to peacefulness, innocence, cleanliness and emptiness, and, for example, mourning in India. Red is regarded as the color of friendship, willpower, leadership, desire and anger - a very wide range of feelings. But it is clear that in nature, it signals danger or importance, so you probably need to put it next to a neutral color to allow the brain to rest. These emotions point in so many different directions that these guidelines seem to boil down to just this: pause and think what the color means for you.

How much space should one leave in front of a cabinet?

In order for a cabinet to be usable, it requires more space on the floorplan than just its size. You have to be able to access it and stand in front of it to get to the boxes and other items kept on a cabinet, and if it has doors, it should be possible to open them. Double doors will require an additional depth of half of the width of the piece, but in general, you should leave 40-60 cm in front of a cabinet for access. This means, for example, a cabinet that is 60 cm deep needs at least 100 cm space. Fortunately, this extra room does not need to be exclusive: access spaces of two or more pieces of furniture can overlap as long as this does not disrupt the flow and lead to people bumping into each other in, for example, an office setting.

From the history of furniture: Brass and copper utensils Part 3

One can hardly realise what change in many ways a the banishment of tea from the usual dietary caused. Even the Southern States were up in arms with New England, and June 1, 1774, was appointed a day of fasting in Virginia. Tea was sealed up and destroyed. Money and provisions were obtained by canvassing the counties, and were dispatched to Boston. But there were some royalist hearts which beat in Virginia, and one owner of such an one, she who had been the lovely Kate Spotswood, but avIio had married Bernard Moore, has had her name come down to us as continuing to sip her tea in the privacy of her closet after it was banished from every table.

Indeed, "tea" was no longer a popular meal; its place was taken by " coffee." Philip Fithian, a tutor in a Virginia family, left a very full diary of what was done among the families with which he came in contact at this time. He enters in his diary Nomini Hall" the following:

"Something very merry happened in our palace this Even ing. Mrs. Carter made a dish of Tea ! At Coffee she sent me a dish — and I and the Colonel both ignorant. He smelt, sipt, look'd! At last with great gravity he asks, 'What's this?' 'Do you ask Sir?' 'Poh!' and out he throws it, splash, a sacrifice to Vulcan."

Colonel Carter was allways a patriot, you see! Three other kettles, two of them of unusual shape, are given in Figure 176. I am very sure that, if we could find their histories engraved on their sides, they would prove interesting reading. They belong in Ipswich, Massachusetts, a town settled as early as 1633 by John Winthrop and his twelve companions. HI me ^1 B'i -

Our philosophy

We aim to allow every one of us to live comfortably even if they only have a small space they call home. We scour the Internet for thousands of tables, cabinets, bookshelves, shoe cabinets, beds, sofabeds and more by size and color, to find just the right one to go next to the bed and turn the room into some closet space, or to find that extra long bed that is still narrow enough to squeeze through the door. From the kitchen to the living room, don't just live next to furniture - have furniture that lives with you.

Did you know? We are also present in other countries. You can visit 24 inch deep cabinets in the US or 60cm deep cabinets in the UK.
