Questions and answers

How do I measure the space to fit a cabinet with doors in?

Measure both the width and the depth of the floor space where you'd like to put a cabinet with doors. The most accurate way is to use a measuring tape. Hold the start of the tape down at the edge of the area, and let it run to the opposite edge. If the distance is larger than what you can stretch to with your arms, ask a friend to help, or divide what you need to measure up into multiple parts. You can do this by either holding the tape down halfway and continuing running it while letting the first end go, or by marking how far you have measured on the floor or wall, and start a new measurement. If you want to avoid drawing on the floor, try putting down a pointy object like a screwdriver there instead. You should avoid dead places where the piece of furniture won't go like pipes. Also it may be necessary to take the height of the space and the item into account wherever the ceiling is uneven like in loft rooms.

How can I coordinate colors?

The two main things to consider for everything color is balance and associations. Balance simply means that the colors in one's home should be coordinated in some way, so that it looks like a unit. This can be achieved by using a color wheel, and selecting colors that are either quite close to each other (colors that are only different in intensity of lightness do go together, but slight variations in tone or hue can also be fine), or relatively far. Associations with and emotions connected to colors are equally important, and there are many lists for these from those by 19th-century Impressionist painters to modern interior design guides. In all likelihood these associations are cultural and learnt, which means that they can be quite different for different individuals. The associations can even be contradictory, which makes it even more difficult to use them as a guide. Blue is often associated with productivity, but also calmness, stability and even sadness. Green is undoubtedly the color of nature, and is said to evoke safety, luck and envy (though in other cultures envy is yellow). Yellow is always a shouty color and can evoke brightness, warmth, energy and attention (likely evoking the sun), except when it is dark and becomes brown, when it is said to be a sign of comfort and relaxation. Red is thought of as the color of friendship, willpower, leadership, desire and revenge - a very wide range of feelings. But it is clear that in nature, it means danger or importance, so you probably need to put it next to a neutral color to allow the brain to rest. These associations point in so many different directions that these guidelines all seem to boil down to just one piece of advice: pause and consider what the color means for you.

From the history of furniture: Lustre ware Part 3

It must be borne in mind that these prices are un- £^QS^ usual; no dealer will ever give them. Yet silver lustre seems to stand apart in value, for I have known a very choice teapot which had lost its spout to have the miss ing member replaced by one of plated silver and then sell for $15.

So far we have dealt only with plain silver lustre, or that cast in moulds.

There is another form of decoration for this variety of lustre which is uncommon and very beautiful. An example is given in Figure 226. I call this the second period, since the plain ware was evidently the first ex pression of the potter's ability to use this metal. All the shapes in which lustre ware was made — pepper pots, tea-sets, jugs, bowls, two-handled cups, and cups and saucers — are to be found in this decorated ware, which is called " resist " from the method of manu facture. Birds and flowers are the subjects oftenest chosen, the patterns often being exceedingly intricate and elaborate.

The article to be decorated was first dipped into or covered with a white or cream-coloured slip, and upon this the pattern was painted with an adhesive mixture which " resisted " the silver lustre when the pottery was dipped into it. All the surface not previously covered with this resistant mixture became covered with the lustre. The second firing (the first was to harden the covering of white slip) burnt away the resist mixture and fixed the silver lustre, and the pattern stands out in white. Eng-

Our philosophy

We strive to allow every one of us to live comfortably even if they only own a small space they call home. We scour the Internet to search among thousands of desks, cabinets, bookcases, shoe cabinets, beds, sofabeds and so on by size and color, to find just the right piece to go under the stairs to finally get some closet space, or to find that extra long bed that is still narrow enough to squeeze through the door. From the hall to the living room, don't just live next to furniture - choose furniture that lives with you.

Have you heard? We also help customers in many other regions. You can visit “armoires avec portes largeur 110 cm” in France or 110cm wide cabinets with doors in the UK.
