Questions and answers

How can I choose the best color for a cabinet with doors?

The two things to consider for everything color is balance and associations. Balance simply means that the colors in your space should be coordinated in some way, so that the space looks like a unit. Usual techniques to achieve this are considering a color wheel, and going for colors that are either quite close to each other, or quite far. Associations with and emotions connected to colors are equally important, and there is no shortage of lists for these from those by 19th-century Impressionist painters to modern interior design guides. It is quite probable that these associations are cultural and learnt, which means that they can be quite different for different individuals. Blue is often associated with productivity, but also stability, calmness and even sadness. Green is clearly the color of nature, and is considered to evoke safety, luck and envy (though in other cultures this latter is yellow instead). Yellow is always a shouty color and can evoke warmth, brightness, attention and energy (likely because of the sun), except when it is dark and becomes brown, when it is thought to be a sign of comfort and relaxation. Red is thought of as the color of friendship, willpower, leadership, desire and anger, which is a very wide range of emotions. But it is clear that in nature, it signals danger or importance, so it should be put next to a calm color to allow the eye to rest. These associations point in so many different directions that these guides seem to boil down to just this: pause and see what the color means for you.

How to measure the space to fit a cabinet with doors in?

Measure the width and the depth of the area where you'd like to place a cabinet with doors. The most accurate way is to use a measuring tape. Hold the beginning of the tape down at the edge of the area, and let it run to the opposite edge. If the distance is larger than what you can stretch to with your arms, ask someone else to help, or divide the distance into multiple parts. This can be done by either holding the tape down partway through and continuing running it while letting the first end go, or by marking how far you measured on the floor or wall, and reposition the tape to complete the measurement. If you want to avoid drawing on the floor, try putting down a pointy object like a pen there instead. Don't forget to avoid dead places where the piece of furniture won't go like skirting boards. Also it may be necessary to measure how high the space is wherever the ceiling is uneven like in loft rooms.

How much space is needed in front of a cabinet with doors?

In order for a cabinet with doors to be usable, it requires more space than just its size alone. You have to be able to access it and be in front of it to get to the books and other items kept on a cabinet with doors, and if a cabinet with doors has doors, they need to be able to be opened. Double doors will generally require an additional depth of half of the width of the piece, but in general, you should provide 40-60 cm in front of a cabinet with doors for access. This means, for example, that a cabinet with doors that is 30 cm deep needs at least 70 cm space. The good news is that this extra space does not need to be exclusive: access spaces of two or more pieces of furniture can overlap as long as this does not disrupt the flow and lead to people bumping into each other in, for example, an office setting.

Our philosophy

We want every one of us to live comfortably even if they only have a small area they call home. We scan dozens of online shops for thousands of tables, cabinets, bookshelves, storage units, beds, armchairs and so on by size and color, to find just the right piece to go next to the window and turn the room into some closet space, or to find that extra long sofa that is still narrow enough to squeeze through the door. From the kitchen to the bedroom, don't live around furniture - have furniture that lives with you.

We are also present in many other regions. You can visit “armoires avec portes largeur 120 cm” in France, 120cm wide cabinets with doors in the UK or 48 inch wide cabinets with doors in the US.
