How much floor space do you need in front of a cabinet with drawers?

Furniture Ferret: One needs space in front of a chest of drawers in addition to the floor space needed for the piece of furniture itself. You should leave enough room to be able to fully extend the drawers, as otherwise getting to files at the bottom end of the drawers can be uncomfrotable. If possible you should also be able to stand in front of the unit, but if this is not possible, position the chest of drawers so you can stand at its side and work from there. At Furniture Ferret, our guide is to leave as much space in front of the cabinet as its depth, so a 60 cm deep unit would need 120 cm in total. While drawers may not extend into the full depth of the unit, and it may not be possible to pull them out fully, this is a safe estimate. Filing cabinets can be surprisingly deep and so can require a fair amount of clearance.

How to use color psychology when choosing a chest of drawers?

Furniture Ferret: The two main things to consider for everything color is balance and associations. Balance simply means that the colors in one's home should be coordinated, so that the space looks like a unit instead of a random collection of elements. Usual techniques to achieve this are considering a color wheel, and going for colors that are either quite close to each other, or quite far, like on opposite sides of the wheel (giving you complementary colors like red and green) or on different thirds (for example, cyan-orange-purple). Associations with and emotions connected to colors are also important to keep in mind, and there is no shortage of lists for these from those by 19th-century Impressionist painters to modern interior design guides. It is quite probable that these associations are cultural and learnt, which means that they can be quite different for different people. The associations can even be contradictory, making it even more difficult to use them as a guide. Blue is often associated with productivity, but also calmness, stability and even sadness. Green is undoubtedly the color of nature, and is considered to be associated with safety, luck and envy (though in other cultures envy is yellow instead). Yellow is always a shouty color and can evoke brightness, warmth, attention and energy (likely because of the sun), except when it is dark and becomes brown, when it is thought to be a sign of comfort and relaxation. Red is thought of as the color of friendship, energy, leadership, desire and revenge, which is a very wide range of feelings. But it is clear that in nature, it means danger or importance, so you probably need to put it next to a calm color to allow the eye to rest. These associations point in so many directions that these guidelines all seem to boil down to just one piece of advice: pause and see what the color means for you.

From the history of furniture: Brass and copper utensils Part 4

Figure 185 has, besides the brass samovar which stands on an antique tray of beaten brass, an incense burner, used on festival days for sprinkling the guests when seated at table with incense. The strange old vase with Arabic characters upon it is made from a single piece of brass, and the candlestick betrays its nationality soplainly that it is hardly necessary to say it is Chinese. These pieces make quite a polyglot company.

The only sugar-bowl which I ever found in brass is given in Figure 186 [...] and with what might be called by courtesy a creamer. The pitcher is much the more venerable [...] the bowl has two handles of cast brass. Both pieces are either of English or American manufacture.

In Figure187 are some other Russian brasses, a coffee-pot and two bowls, the bowl which stands flat on the table being of extremely crude workmanship and very old. The other is in two pieces, and they are riveted together. Figure 188 shows the metal work of three nations. The kettle to the right is a handsome piece of brass repousse work, with a fine coat of arms for decoration. Once upon a time it had a piece of wood upon the iron bar which holds the two ends of the handle together, but this was burned off long ago, and even the iron is much corroded. This came from England. The brass tea-kettle in the centre is home-made, and furnished to cold and tired travellers hot water in plenty for their toddy. The brass pitcher with upturned lip is Dutch, and seems as if it might have borne company with the old brass shaving-bowls of a century or more ago.
