How much clearance does one need for a cabinet with drawers?
One needs extra space in front of a chest of drawers in addition to the room needed for the unit itself. You will likely need enough room to be able to fully extend the drawers, as otherwise accessing files at the bottom end of the drawers can be tricky. Ideally you should also be able to stand in front of the cabinet, but if there is not enough space, you can try positioning the chest of drawers so you can stand at its side. At Furniture Ferret, our approximate guide is to leave as much space in front of the unit as its depth, so a 30 cm deep chest of drawers would need 60 cm in total. While drawers may not extend into the full depth of the cabinet, and you may not be able to pull them out fully, this is a safe estimate. Filing cabinets can be surprisingly deep and so may need a fair amount of space.

From the history of furniture: Chests And Cupboards Part 3

Could anything be finer than the Dutch Kas shown in Figure 152? The date of this chest is approximately the same as that shown in Figure 149, but it is a very elegant article of its kind. There is a long drawer at the bottom; both sets of cupboards open, and there are shelves within. It must have taken the good atouw and her daughter many years to grow the flax, hatchel, bleach, and spin the thread, and then weave it into linen cloth that must be bleached again many times before it came to the required whiteness which every good Dutch housewife considered necessary in her "Hollands."

The ball feet seen on this Kas were a Dutch design, copied both by the English and by us. Many plain I* ' chests are found in America with these ball feet like the t -*. one in Figure 153. This piece shows the first step in the evolution of the chest, for a drawer is added. Dr. Lyon says, in his book on "Colonial Furniture," that the first mention made of a one-drawer chest is in the inventory of the goods of the Rev. Nathaniel Rogers, of Ipswich, Massachusetts, dated August, 1655. The value was given as sixteen shillings.

Sometimes this single drawer was divided, and in the earliest specimens the runners on which the drawer moved were on the sides of the chest, — not on the bottom, as came later. The sides of the drawer had a deep groove in them, and a stout runner was on the side of the chest.

Questions and answers

How to measure the space to fit a chest of drawers in?

Measure the width and the depth of the space where you'd like to put a chest of drawers. The most accurate way is to use a measuring tape. Hold the start down at the edge of the area, and let it run to the other edge. Make sure the tape is not diagonal, as otherwise you would overestimate the available space. If the distance is larger than what you can stretch to, ask a friend to assist, or divide the distance up into multiple parts. This can be done by either holding the tape down halfway and continuing running it while letting the first end go, or by marking how far you measured on the floor or wall, and start a new measurement. If you want to avoid drawing on your floor, try putting down a pointy object like a pen there. Make sure to avoid dead places where the piece of furniture won't go like electric sockets. Also it may be necessary to measure how high the space is wherever the ceiling is low.
