So that a cabinet would be usable, it needs more space than just its size. One needs to be able to access it and be in front of it to get to the books and other items kept on a cabinet, and if it has doors, it should be possible to open them. Double doors will need an additional depth of half of the width of the item, and in general, you should provide 40-60 cm in front of a cabinet for access. This means, for example, that a cabinet that is 50 cm deep needs at least 90 cm space. The good news is that this extra room does not need to be exclusive: access spaces of two or more pieces of furniture can overlap as long as this is not expected to lead to people bumping into each other in, for example, an office setting.
The two main things to consider when it comes to colors is balance and associations. Balance simply means that the colors in your room should be coordinated, so that it looks like a unit. This can be achieved by using a color wheel, and going for colors that are either quite close to each other (colors that are only different in intensity of lightness always go together, but small variations in hue can also be fine), or quite far. Other color combinations are likely be somewhat jarring just based on how our eyes and brains understand color. Associations with and emotions connected to colors are also important to keep in mind. It is quite probable that these emotions are cultural and learnt, which means that they can be quite different in different cultures or for different people. Blue is often connected to productivity, but also calmness, stability and even sadness. Green is clearly the color of nature, and is considered to evoke safety, luck and envy (though in other cultures this latter is yellow instead). Yellow is always a shouty color and can evoke warmth, brightness, attention and energy (likely because of the sun), except when it is dark and becomes brown, when it is said to be relaxing and comfortable. Red is regarded as the color of friendship, energy, leadership, desire and revenge, which is a very wide range of emotions. But it is clear that in nature, it means danger or importance, so it should be put next to a neutral color to allow the eye to rest. These emotions are so different that these guides all seem to boil down to just this: pause and see what the color means for you.
Finding cabinets in search engines on the web by measurements is difficult as search engines are best at finding text only. Also, when searching for cabinets to fit a given space, a bit smaller items would also suit. Even if some outlets allow searching for cabinets by size, searching many websites at the same time is time-consuming. Furniture Ferret scan many outlets on the web and list tens of thousands of items to allow you to buy the one that is just perfect.
"Of bread of wheat we have sundry sorts daily brought to the table, whereof the first and most excellent is the manchet, which we commonly call white bread, in Latin, primarius panis; and our good workmen deliver commonly such proportion that of the flour of one bushel with another they make forty cast of manchet, of which every loaf weigheth eight ounces into the oven, and six ounces out."
It was to keep the trencher bread dry that the cup board was pierced. This cupboard is a fine one, — of oak, with some good carving upon it, and the original hinges. Upon the shelf in front of the upper doors was room for a toav of plate or pewter, and even on the top beakers and jugs which were not in common use could be displayed.
The livery cupboard was really a"set of shelves with out doors. Mr. Litchfield, in his History of Furni ture," quotes from a record in the British Museum for joiners' Hengrave about some work which was done at 1518, in which livery cupboards are specified. Ye cobards they be made ye facyon of livery y wthout doors."
Two very splendid cupboards are given in other Figures 165 and 166, the former covered with a beautiful fretwork. This piece dates to about 1630 and has still the ornate hinges and clumsy handles with which started. It is of oak, and the handles and hinges are of iron, as they should be. The last cupboard or cabinet (it can be called by either name) is handsome of its kind, but belongs to the seventeenth century. It of oak, is and belongs to the Water's collection of Salem, Massachusetts. The built-in cupboards are often charming, but are generally the work of the carpenter rather than the cabinet-maker. They were made either with doors or without, and the choicest which can be found in this country are those which have a great shell forming a concave top. In many of the old houses cupboards such as these still can be found, often incorporated with the wainscot, and I have seen particularly choice ones in Deerfield, Massachusetts, as well as in Concord, and at Salem in the same State.
