How to measure the space to fit a sofa bed in?
Measure both the width and the depth of the floor area where you'd like to put a sofa bed. The easiest way is to use a measuring tape. Hold the start of the tape down at the edge of the area, and let it run to the other edge. If the distance is larger than what you can stretch to with your arms, ask someone else to help, or divide the distance up into multiple parts. You can do this by either holding the tape down halfway and continuing running it while letting the first end go, or by marking how far you have measured on the floor or wall, and reposition the tape to complete the measurement. If you would not like to make a mark on your floor, try putting down a pointy object like a pen there. You should avoid dead places where the piece of furniture won't go like skirting boards. Also don't forget to take the height of the space and the item into account wherever the ceiling is uneven like in loft rooms.
From the history of furniture: Old-Fashioned Bedsteads Part 1

" Night is about twelve feet square. It is still preserved at Rye House, near to the Saracen's Head Inn, where it formerly was. The beds now in use in Hatfield House, the historic home of the Marquis of Salisbury, are built on the plan of the " Great Bed of Ware," and the sheets for them have to be specially woven in Germany. The earliest beds which remain for the edification of the student are those which date from the Elizabethan period. These, like those of an earlier period, are of oak, and there are some in this country which have been brought here from England, and in the great public collections in the latter country there are other fine examples to be studied. In Figure 204 is a choice specimen that claims attention on more than one ac count. It is of the Tudor period, with a canopy, and with four arched panels carved and inlaid, and with carved and inlaid borders at the sides. The canopy is panelled as well as inlaid and carved, and the Ioav foot board is also carved. This bed is but five feet two inches wide and seven feet high. It is in perfect condition, and once belonged to the poet Lord Byron, who gave it to his housekeeper, Mrs. Broughton. Her daughter sold it to the late Mr. Wilson of Tuxford Hall, Nottinghamshire, England, and within a few months, at the sale of his effects, it was purchased by a firm aaIio deal in antiques. These beds, while sump tuous to the eye, were not very soft to lie upon, as they were laced across with ropes. Many beds of feathers were necessary to give them comfort, and as early as 1509 regulations were drawn up with regard to the quality of feathers to be used, and I quote the ensuing words from the Lansdown MSS.:

Questions and answers

How much free space should one leave around the sofa bed?

The sofa bed is the main furniture in a bedroom, but you need extra space around it to be able to access it. But how much exactly? You will need about 75-90 cm room either side of the bed as well as at the foot, with the more space for more relaxed arrangements. In other words, for a 80 cm wide bed, you need a 230 cm wide floor space. At the same time, you can save space by placing the sofa bed against the wall on one side, especially for single beds used by one person. This can create a cozy corner, and reduces the space needed by a 80 cm wide sofa bed to 155 cm in width. Creating an arrangement with the sofa bed under sloping ceilings is also ideal as these spaces would be impossible to utilise, but the height of the space should not be so low that it leads to regular annoyance or head injuries when getting into or out of the sofa bed. Choosing a foldable bed can also be a space-saving option.

Is it possible to find sofa beds by width, height and length?

Finding sofa beds in search engines on the web by measurements is not straightforward as search engines are best at finding text only. Also, when searching for sofa beds to fit a given space, slightly shallower items are also suitable. Even if some shops allow searching for sofa beds by measurements, checking many websites at the same time needs a different solution. This is where Furniture Ferret comes handy. Our systems scan many webshops and list tens of thousands of items so you can buy the one that fits perfectly.

Our philosophy

We want everyone to live comfortably even if they only own a small area they call home. We scour the Internet for thousands of desks, cabinets, bookcases, storage units, beds, tables, armchairs and so on by size, to find just the right one for you to go next to the bed and turn the room into a dressing corner, or to find that extra long sofa that is still narrow enough to squeeze through the door. From the hall to the bedroom, don't live around furniture - get furniture that lives with you.

We are also present in many other countries. You can look for 32 inch wide sofa beds in Canada or 80 cm wide sofa beds in the UK.
