How to choose a color for a bed?
If you can choose between different colors for a bed that fits your space, it is useful to know what the effects of the different colors are. The two things to consider when it comes to colors is balance and associations. Balance means that the colors should ideally be coordinated in some way, so that the room looks like a unit instead of a random collection of elements. This can be achieved by using a color wheel, and selecting colors that are either quite close to each other (colors that are only different in lightness or intensity do go together, but small variations in hue can also be fine), or quite far, like on different halves of the wheel (complementary colors like red and green). Other color combinations are likely be somewhat jarring just based on how our eyes and brains understand color. Associations with and emotions connected to colors are also important, and there are many lists for these from those by 19th-century Impressionist painters to modern interior design guides. In all likelihood these associations are cultural and learnt, which means that they can be very different in different cultures or just for different individuals. The associations can even be contradictory, making it even more difficult to use them as a guide. Blue is often connected to productivity, but also stability, calmness and even sadness. Green is clearly the color of nature, and is said to be associated with safety, luck and envy (though in other cultures this latter is yellow instead). White can be connected to peacefulness, innocence, cleanliness and emptiness, and, for example, mourning in India. Red is considered to be the color of friendship, willpower, leadership, desire and anger - a very wide range of feelings. But it is clear that in nature, it means danger or importance, so you probably need to put it next to a neutral color to allow the brain to rest. These associations are so varied that these guidelines seem to boil down to just this: pause and think what the color means for you.

Is it possible to find beds using their width, height and length?
Finding beds in search engines on the Internet by measurements is not straightforward as search engines are best at finding words only. Also, when searching for beds to fit a given space, a bit shallower items would also suit. Even if some websites allow searching for beds by size, checking many websites at the same time needs a different solution. Furniture Ferret to the rescue! We scan many outlets on the web and list tens of thousands of products to allow you to find the one that fits perfectly.

From the history of furniture: The history of beds

1. Oak Four-poster Bed. The posts are nulled and the lower turned portion is of the cup and cover type. Elizabethan Period. Second half of 16th Century.

Contemporaneously with the four-poster was the trundle bed, a low structure probably used by the servant, and so made that it could be pushed out of sight when not required for use.

Another form of bedstead of a simpler type is shown in Fig. 2. This was probably made for the middle classes, and was similar in form to those in use at the present time, except that the foot consisted of two short upright posts joined by a rail. The bedding was generally supported by ropes interlaced through holes in the bed rails.

2. Oak Bedstead with arcaded head panels. The original foot is missing. but that shown is its probable form. Jacobean Period. Early 17th Century.

The four-poster continued in use throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, the Jacobean type being similar to the Elizabethan except that the posts of the former type were, as a rule, slighter and the carving more restrained. The bed proper was in some cases also joined to the front posts.

An example of a Queen Anne bed is given in Fig. 3, in which a great change is noticeable. Beds of this type were covered with hangings, the posts being often simply plain squares covered with material and draped round with hangings. The cornice was often of very elaborate shaping and section, and was stretched with cloth. The head was also decorated with a shaped board, moulded and stretched with material. This is seen in the example. The height of these beds varied tremendously, the general tendency being towards height.

Questions and answers

How do I measure the space to fit a bed in?

Measure the width and the depth of the area where you'd like to place a bed. The easiest way is to use a measuring tape. Hold the start down at the edge of the area, and let it run to the opposite edge. Make sure the tape is not diagonal, or else you get a value larger than the reality. If the distance is larger than what you can stretch to with your arms, ask someone else to assist, or split the distance into multiple parts. This can be done by either holding the tape down halfway and continuing running it while letting the first end go, or by marking how far you measured on the floor or wall, and start a new measurement. If you would not like to make a mark on the floor, try putting down a pointy object like a pen there instead. Make sure to avoid dead places where the piece of furniture won't be able to go like skirting boards. Also don't forget to take the height of the space and the item into account wherever the ceiling is uneven.

How much free space does one need around the bed?

The bed is the main furniture in a bedroom, but you need some space around it to be able to access it. But how much exactly? One will need about 30-36 in extra space on both sides of the bed as well as at the foot, with the more space for more relaxed set-ups. In other words, for a 40 in wide bed, you need a 100 in wide space. At the same time, you can save space by pushing the bed against the wall on one side, especially for single beds used by one person. This can create a cozy corner, and reduces the space needed by a 40 in wide bed to about 70 in in width. Creating an arrangement with the bed under sloping ceilings is also ideal as often these spaces would be hard to utilise, but the height of the space should not be so low that it leads to regular annoyance or head injuries. Opting for a sofa bed can also be a space-saving option.

Our philosophy

We want to allow everyone to live comfortably even if they only own a small space they call home. We search the Internet for thousands of desks, cabinets, bookcases, shoe cabinets, beds, tables, armchairs and more by size, to find just the right piece to go next to the bed and turn the room into a dressing corner, or to find that extra long bed that is still narrow enough to squeeze through the door. From the hall to the bathroom, don't live around furniture - buy furniture that lives with you.

Did you know? We also operate in many other countries. You can look for 96 inch long beds in the US, 245 cm long beds in Ireland, 245 cm long beds in the UK or 245 cm long beds in Australia.
