What is the best way to measure the space to fit a table in?
Measure both the width and the depth of the area where you'd like to place a table. The most accurate way is to use a measuring tape. Hold the start of the tape down at the edge of the area, and let it run to the other edge. If the distance is larger than what you can stretch to with your arms, ask a friend to help, or divide the distance up into multiple parts. This can be done by either holding the tape down halfway and continuing running it while letting the first end go, or by marking how far you have measured on the floor or wall, and start a new measurement. If you would not like to draw on your floor, you can position a pointy object like a screwdriver there. You should avoid dead places where the piece of furniture won't be able to go like skirting boards. Also it may be necessary to take the height of the space and the item into account wherever the ceiling is low.

Is it possible to search for tables using their size?
Finding tables in search engines on the web by measurements is not straightforward as search engines are best at finding text only. Also, when searching for tables to fit a given space, somewhat smaller pieces would also suit. Even if some outlets allow searching for tables by measurements, searching many webshops at the same time needs a different solution. Furniture Ferret to the rescue! Our systems scan many outlets and list tens of thousands of products so you can get the one that fits perfectly.

What is the best color for a table?
The color scheme in one's room can be a bit accidental, but it has a great effect on the feelings you get from your home. The two things to consider when it comes to colors is balance and associations. Balance means that the colors in one's room should ideally be coordinated, so that it looks like a unit instead of a random collection of elements. This can be achieved by using a color wheel, and choosing colors that are either quite close to each other (as colors that are only different in intensity of lightness do go together, but slight variations in tone or hue can also be fine), or quite far, like on different halves of the wheel (complementary colors like red and green) or on different thirds (for example, cyan-orange-purple). Associations with and emotions connected to colors are also important to keep in mind, and there are many guides for these from those by 19th-century Impressionist painters to modern interior design guides. In all likelihood these associations are cultural and learnt, which means that they can be quite different in different cultures or just for different people. The associations are even often contradictory, making it even more difficult to use them as a guide. Blue is often connected to productivity, but also stability, calmness and even sadness. Green is undoubtedly the color of nature, and is said to evoke safety, luck and envy (though in other cultures this latter is yellow instead). White can be connected to peacefulness, cleanliness, innocence and emptiness, and, for example, mourning in India. Red is regarded as the color of friendship, energy, leadership, desire and anger - a very wide range of feelings. But it is clear that in nature, it means danger or importance, so it should be put next to a neutral color to allow the eye to rest. These emotions are so different that these guides all seem to boil down to just one piece of advice: pause and see what the color means for you.

How much free space does one need to leave in front of a table?
Finding the right place for a table needs a larger area than just the size of the item itself, as you will also need approx. 20-30 in behind the chair. Reserving this space means that you can easily push the chair back to stand up, or turn around to a cabinet or shelves behind you. Together with the chair, this means keeping a space 40 in deep free in front of a table. For example, 54 in deep tables would require a 94 in deep space in total. The extra area behind the chair doesn't need to be dead space, as it can double as the area you need to access drawers, shelves or a filing cabinet.
From the history of furniture: The history of tables

3. Oak Table having turned legs and "S" strap and leaf carving in the frieze. Jacobean Period. First half of 17th Century.

The draw-table in Fig. 4 is illustrative of a Charles II table, in which the bulbous leg has been revived, though with an altered contour. The table exhibits Dutch influence, a feeling which was the result of the return of Charles II from the Continent.

4. Draw Table with inlaid top and bulbous legs. The design shows Dutch influence. (Oak.) Charles II Period. Second half of 17th Century.

A type of table made in considerable numbers during the 17th century was the gate leg, of which Fig. 5 is an example. They were usually made of oak, although towards the end of the century walnut was more frequently used. The majority of the walnut tables, however, were of rather different formation.

5. Oak Gate-leg Table with turned legs. Jacobean Period. First half of 17th Century.

Fig. 6 is a walnut table decorated with marquetry, and is of interest as showing the development of the shaped flat lower stretcher in place of the plain straight rails.

6. Walnut Side Table with flat stretcher. The top and drawer fronts are decorated with marquetry. William and Mary Period. Late 17th Century.

The Queen Anne period was noticeable for the number of card tables produced. They were usually veneered and had cabriole legs, the upper termination of which was often rounded as shown in Fig. 7.
