From the history of furniture: Tables And Sideboards Part 2

Fifty years later saw a great difference in the fur nishings which were OAAmed by a successful Boniface. In 1730 Abel Chapin died in the little town of Chico- pee, Massachusetts, and he had grown rich in keeping an inn. The imrentory of his estate contains six hun dred items, among them being thirty-six linen sheets and six tablecloths. In the pmTate home it was long before the separate room was used for dining. If the warm and comfort able kitchen was not used, meals were served in the "great or the hall, which was a much more important part of the house than we make it. At first, even in manor or castle, there was but a screen put up to furnish pmracy for the family, since the retainers and men-at-arms all ate in the same room and at the same time as the family. Little by little the dining- room gained favour, and even then held a bed, along with the Flanders' chests, forms and joint stools, and the long table-board.

The dining-table, which was in use at this time — that is, about 1650 — and for the next fifty years, is shown in the next figure, No. 5. It is variously known as the "gate-legged " "" or the hundred legged table, and it was one like this, made of oak, which had a place in the dining-room of William Penn, though his had fewer legs.

About the middle of the eighteenth century there were improvements in the serving-tables, as can be seen in Figure 6; for this has two leaves, which can be pulled out, so that its capacity can be increased. The example shown is a very handsome one, with a carved frieze rail, and two carved rosettes at the top of each leg. The wood is mahogany.

Questions and answers

What is the best way to measure the space to fit a table in?

Measure both the width and the depth of the floor area where you'd like to put a table. The most accurate way is to use a measuring tape. Hold the start down at the edge of the area, and let it run to the other edge. Make sure the tape is not diagonal, as otherwise you get a value larger than the reality. If the distance is larger than what you can stretch to with your arms, ask someone else to help, or divide the distance up into multiple parts. You can do this by either holding the tape down partway through and continuing running it while letting the first end go, or by marking how far you have measured on the floor or wall, and start a new measurement. If you want to avoid drawing on your floor, you can position a pointy object like a pencil there. You should avoid dead places where the piece of furniture won't be able to go like skirting boards. Also it may be necessary to take the height of the space and the item into account wherever the ceiling is low.

What is the best color for a table?

The color scheme in your room can be a result of necessity, but it has considerable effect on how you feel in your room. The two things to consider when it comes to colors is balance and associations. Balance simply means that the colors should ideally be coordinated in some way, so that the space looks like a unit instead of a random collection of elements. Usual techniques to achieve this are considering a color wheel, and selecting colors that are either quite close to each other (as colors that are only different in lightness or intensity always go together, but slight variations in hue can also be fine), or relatively far, for example on different halves of the wheel (complementary colors like blue and yellow). Other color combinations are likely be somewhat jarring just based on how our eyes and brains understand color. Associations with and emotions connected to colors are equally important to keep in mind. In all likelihood these associations are cultural and learnt, which means that they can be quite different in different cultures or for different individuals. The associations are even often contradictory, which makes it even more difficult to use them as a guide. Blue is often connected to productivity, but also stability, calmness and even sadness. Green is undoubtedly the color of nature, and is considered to be associated with safety, luck and envy (though in other cultures envy is yellow). Yellow is always a shouty color and can evoke brightness, warmth, energy and attention (likely evoking the sun), except when it is dark and becomes brown, when it is thought to be a sign of comfort and relaxation. Red is considered to be the color of friendship, energy, leadership, desire and anger - a very wide range of feelings. But it is clear that in nature, it signals danger and importance, so you probably need to put it next to a neutral color to allow the brain to rest. These associations are so varied that these guides seem to boil down to just this: pause and think what the color means for you.

Our philosophy

We strive to allow everyone to live comfortably even if they only have a small space they call home. We scour the Internet for thousands of desks, cabinets, shelves, shoe cabinets, beds, tables, armchairs and more by size, to find just the right one to go in that unused corner and turn it into a practical office, or to find that extra long bed that is still narrow enough to squeeze through the door. From the kitchen to the living room, don't live around furniture - choose furniture that lives with you.

Have you heard? We also operate in many other regions. You can look for 170 cm wide tables in the UK, 170 cm wide tables in Australia, 65 inch wide tables in the US or 170 cm wide tables in Ireland.
