Finding tables in search engines on the web by measurements is difficult as search engines are best at finding text only. How much space do I have to leave in front of a table?
Placing a table needs more space than just the item itself, as you also need approx. 20-30 in extra behind the chair. Reserving this space means that you will be able to push the chair back to stand up, or turn around to a cabinet or shelves behind you. So altogether you will need an area 40 in deep free in front of a table. In other words, 84 in deep tables would require a 124 in deep floor space in total. The room behind the chair doesn't need to be dead space, as it can also be used as the room required to access a dresser, filing cabinet, or a bookshelf.

From the history of furniture: The history of tables

The earliest form of table was known as a trestle table, and consisted of a roughly-hewn and heavy top supported by solid end pieces, these being generally cut to a crude Gothic shaping. They were held in position by rails tenoned through the trestle ends and secured by pegs, the whole being so arranged that by withdrawing the pegs the table could be taken to pieces and so cleared away when its space was required for other purposes.

An example of this type is shown in Fig. 1, which is typical of these early pieces. The piece is very massive, the only attempt at decoration being in the shaped trestle ends.

1. Trestle Table with shaped end supports to which the rails are secured with pegs. (Elm.) Tudor Gothic Period. First half of 16th Century.

The next stage is shown in Fig. 2, in which the under portion is framed together. The legs are of the heavy bulbous type common at this time, turned in the cup and cover form, and carved with nullings and acanthus leaf-work. The frieze rail is inlaid with a small geometrical pattern and is finished at the lower edge with a carved moulding.

2. Draw Table with heavy carved bulbous legs and inlaid rails. (Oak.) Elizabethan Period. Second half of 16th Century.

This table illustrates a very interesting type evolved in the early 16th century, being made to extend. It is known as a draw-table, and the extending leaves, when the table is closed, are under the main top, as shown in the illustration, and when required are drawn out and supported by bearers, these being tapered so that when. extended they bring the leaves up to the height of the main top, which drops in place.

Questions and answers

How do I measure the space to fit a table in?

Measure the width and the depth of the floor space where you'd like to put a table. The most accurate way is to use a measuring tape. Hold the start down at the edge of the area, and let it run to the opposite edge. Make sure the tape is not diagonal, or else you would overestimate the available space. If the distance is larger than what you can stretch to, ask a friend to assist, or split what you need to measure into multiple parts. You can do this by either holding the tape down partway through and continuing running it while letting the first end go, or by marking how far you measured on the floor or wall, and start a new measurement. If you would not like to make a mark on your floor, you can position a pointy object like a pen there instead. Don't forget to avoid dead places where the piece of furniture won't be able to go like skirting boards. Also don't forget to measure the height of the space wherever the ceiling is uneven like in loft rooms.

What is the best color for a table?

The color scheme in one's home can be a result of necessity, but it has considerable effect on how you feel in your space. The two main things to consider when it comes to colors is balance and associations. Balance means that the colors should be coordinated, so that the space looks like a unit, and not just a random collection of elements. Usual techniques to achieve this are considering a color wheel, and going for colors that are either quite close to each other (colors that are only different in intensity of lightness always go together, but slight variations in tone can also work), or relatively far, for example on opposite sides of the wheel (giving you complementary colors like blue and yellow). Associations with and emotions connected to colors are equally important to keep in mind. It is quite probable that these emotions are cultural and learnt, which means that they can be quite different in different cultures or for different people. The associations can even be contradictory, making it even more difficult to use them as a guide. Blue is often associated with productivity, but also calmness, stability and even sadness. Green is clearly the color of nature, and is said to be connected to safety, luck and envy (though in other cultures this latter is yellow). Yellow is always a shouty color and can mean brightness, warmth, attention and energy (likely because of the sun), except when it is dark and becomes brown, when it is said to be a sign of comfort and relaxation. Red is considered to be the color of friendship, willpower, leadership, desire and revenge - a very wide range of emotions. But it is clear that in nature, it means danger and importance, so it should be put next to a calm color to allow the eye to rest. These emotions are so varied that these guides all seem to boil down to just one piece of advice: pause and see what the color means for you.

Our philosophy

We aim to allow every one of us to live comfortably even if they only have a small area they call home. We search the Internet for thousands of desks, cabinets, bookcases, shoe cabinets, beds, tables, armchairs and so on by size, to find just the right one to go under the stairs to finally get some closet space, or to find that extra long bed that is still narrow enough to squeeze through the bedroom door. From the hall to the living room, don't live around furniture - choose furniture that lives with you.

Did you know? We also operate in other countries. You can visit 215 cm deep tables in Ireland or 215 cm deep tables in the UK.
