How much space does one have to leave in front of a desk?
Placing a desk needs more floor space than just the size of the item itself, as you need approx. 50-76 cm extra behind the chair. Reserving this space means that you can easily push the chair back to stand up, or in an office swivel to access a credenza or bookshelf behind you. Together with the chair, this means keeping an area 100 cm deep free in front of a desk. For example, 120 cm deep desks would require a 220 cm deep floor space in total. This doesn't mean that the room behind the chair is dead space, though, as it can also be used as the room you need to access drawers, shelves or a filing cabinet.

What is the best colour for a desk?
The colour scheme in one's room can be a result of necessity, but it has a great effect on how you feel in your space. The two main things to consider for everything colour is balance and associations. Balance simply means that the colours in one's home should be coordinated in some way, so that it looks like a unit instead of a random collection of elements. Usual techniques to achieve this are considering a colour wheel, and choosing colours that are either quite close to each other (colours that are only different in intensity of lightness do go together, but slight variations in the actual hue can also work), or quite far, for example on different halves of the wheel (giving you complementary colours like red and green) or on different thirds (for example, red-green-blue). Other colour combinations are likely be somewhat jarring because of how our eyes and brains understand colour. Associations with and emotions connected to colours are equally important to keep in mind, and there is no shortage of lists for these from those by 19th-century Impressionist painters to modern interior design guides. It is quite probable that these emotions are cultural and learnt, which means that they can be very different in different cultures or for different people. The associations can even be contradictory, which makes it even more difficult to use them as a guide. Blue is often connected to productivity, but also stability, calmness and even sadness. Green is undoubtedly the colour of nature, and is said to be connected to safety, luck and envy (though in other cultures this latter is yellow). Yellow is always a shouty colour and can evoke brightness, warmth, energy and attention (likely evoking the sun), except when it is dark and becomes brown, when it is thought to be a sign of comfort and relaxation. Red is regarded as the colour of friendship, willpower, leadership, desire and revenge, which is a very wide range of feelings. But it is clear that in nature, it means danger and importance, so you probably need to put it next to a calm colour to allow the eye to rest. These emotions point in so many different directions that these guidelines seem to boil down to just one piece of advice: pause and think what the colour means for you.

Is it possible to find desks by width, height and length?
Finding desks in search engines on the web by measurements is not straightforward as search engines are best at finding words only. Also, when searching for desks to fit a given space, somewhat narrower pieces would also fit. Even if some shops allow searching for desks by size, checking many outlets at the same time needs a different solution. Furniture Ferret to the rescue! Our systems scan many webshops and index tens of thousands of items to allow you to find the one that fits perfectly.
From the history of furniture: Desks And Secretaries Part 1

Another of these rare old Bible boxes is seen in Figure 264. This has a slanting lid, is made of oak, and has rude carving on the front and base. It is dated 1651, and has the initials of its Owner, A. W., on the centre of the front. The old iron hinges show on the top, and, in view of its age, the box is in an excellent state of repair. This box is twenty inches long and thirteen inches high. It once had a small shelf at the back.

The term " desk " occurs with extreme rarity in the old inventories, and even so refers to these box-like desks with either a flat or sloping top. By 1700 writing- tables were in use in Europe, and the French " scrutor," as it was most often called, began to be found Over here.

®®/A The combination of drawers with a desk top was one of the early forms taken by this useful piece of furni ture, and by as early as 1710 such desks were found here, both of domestic and foreign make.

When we take into consideration the activity of every maker and designer of furniture to publish a book con taining his ideas, we are not surprised that so many pieces resembling English work are to be found here, and were the product of our natire cabinet-makers. As early as 1739 works more or less valuable were being constantly presented to the public, and perhaps Wil liam Jones, when he published his " Gentleman's or Builder's Companion," in 1739, could call liimself the pioneer in this line, in England.
