What is the best colour for an armoire?
Furniture Ferret: The two things to consider when it comes to colours is balance and associations. Balance simply means that the colours should ideally be coordinated, so that the room looks like a unit. This can be achieved by using a colour wheel, and going for colours that are either quite close to each other (as colours that are only different in intensity of lightness do go together, but small variations in the actual hue can also work), or relatively far or on different thirds (for example, red-green-blue). Associations with and emotions connected to colours are equally important, and there are many guides for these from those by 19th-century Impressionist painters to modern interior design guides. In all likelihood these emotions are cultural and learnt, which means that they can be very different in different cultures or just for different people. Blue is often connected to productivity, but also stability, calmness and even sadness. Green is undoubtedly the colour of nature, and is considered to be associated with safety, luck and envy (though in other cultures this latter is yellow). White can be associated with peacefulness, cleanliness, innocence and emptiness, and, for example, mourning in India. Red is regarded as the colour of friendship, willpower, leadership, desire and anger - a very wide range of feelings. But it is clear that in nature, it signals danger and importance, so you probably need to put it next to a neutral colour to allow the brain to rest. These associations are so varied that these guidelines seem to boil down to just this: pause and think what the colour means for you.

How much room is needed in front of an armoire?
So that an armoire would be usable, it needs more space on the floorplan than just its size. One needs to be able to access it and stand in front of it to get to the documents and other items kept on an armoire, and if it has doors, it should be possible to open them fully. In general, you will need 40-60 cm in front of an armoire for access. This means, for example, that an armoire that is 40 cm deep needs at least 80 cm space. The good news is that this extra space does not need to be exclusive: access spaces of two or more pieces of furniture can overlap as long as this does not disrupt the flow and lead to people bumping into each other in, for example, an office.
How to measure the space to fit an armoire in?
Measure the width and the depth of the space where you'd like to put an armoire. The most accurate way is to use a measuring tape. Hold the start down at the edge of the area, and let it run to the other edge. If the distance is larger than what you can stretch to, ask someone else to help, or divide what you need to measure up into multiple parts. This can be done by either holding the tape down partway through and continuing running it while letting the first end go, or by marking how far you have measured on the floor or wall, and reposition the tape to complete the measurement. If you would not like to draw on your floor, you can position a pointy object like a pen there. You should avoid dead places where the piece of furniture won't be able to go like electric sockets. Also don't forget to take the height of the space and the item into account wherever the ceiling is low.
