How can one search for armoires using their size?

Furniture Ferret: Finding armoires in search engines on the web by measurements is not straightforward as search engines are best at finding text only. Also, when searching for armoires to fit a given space, somewhat narrower pieces would also suit. Even if some websites allow searching for armoires by measurements, checking many websites at the same time is time-consuming. Furniture Ferret scan many websites on the web and index thousands of items so you can buy the one that fits perfectly.

How to measure the space to fit an armoire in?

Furniture Ferret: Measure both the width and the depth of the floor space where you'd like to place an armoire. The most accurate way is to use a measuring tape. Hold the beginning down at the edge of the area, and let it run to the other edge. If the distance is larger than what you can stretch to with your arms, ask someone else for help, or split what you need to measure up into multiple parts. This can be done by either holding the tape down halfway and continuing running it while letting the first end go, or by marking how far you have measured on the floor or wall, and start a new measurement. If you would not like to draw on the floor, try putting down a pointy object like a pen there instead. Make sure to avoid dead places where the piece of furniture won't be able to go like decorative strips. Also it may be necessary to take the height of the space and the item into account wherever the ceiling is uneven.

Questions and answers

How can I coordinate colours?

If you have the option to choose from different colours for an armoire that fits your space and budget, it is helpful to know what the effects of the different colours are likely to be. The two main things to consider for everything colour is balance and associations. Balance means that the colours should ideally be coordinated, so that the room looks like a unit. Usual techniques to achieve this are considering a colour wheel, and choosing colours that are either quite close to each other (as colours that are only different in lightness or intensity do go together, but slight differences in the actual tone or hue can also be fine), or relatively far, like on opposite sides of the wheel (giving you complementary colours like red and green) or on different thirds (for example, cyan-orange-purple). Other colour combinations are likely be somewhat jarring just based on how our eyes and brains understand colour. Associations with and emotions connected to colours are equally important to keep in mind. In all likelihood these emotions are cultural and learnt, which means that they can be very different for different individuals. Blue is often associated with productivity, but also calmness, stability and even sadness. Green is undoubtedly the colour of nature, and is considered to be associated with safety, luck and envy (though in other cultures this latter is yellow). White can be connected to peacefulness, cleanliness, innocence and emptiness, and, for example, mourning in India. Red is regarded as the colour of friendship, energy, leadership, desire and revenge, which is a very wide range of feelings. But it is clear that in nature, it means danger or importance, so you probably need to put it next to a neutral colour to allow the eye to rest. These emotions point in so many directions that these guidelines all seem to boil down to just this: pause and consider what the colour means for you.

How much room should one leave in front of an armoire?

So that an armoire would be usable, it needs more space on the floorplan than just its size. You need to be able to access it and be in front of it to access papers and other items stored on an armoire, and if an armoire has doors, they need to be able to be opened fully. Double doors will need an additional depth of half of the width of the item, but in general, you should provide 40-60 cm in front of an armoire for access. This means, for example, that an armoire that is 40 cm deep needs at least 80 cm space. The good news is that this extra room does not need to be exclusive: access spaces of two or more pieces of furniture can overlap as long as this is not expected to disrupt the flow and lead to people bumping into each other in, for example, an office.

From the history of furniture: Antique glassware Part 4

A most unusual article, at least in this country, is shown in Figure 126 standing on a beautiful Sheraton candlestand. This is a glass globe filled with water, which was used to concentrate the light of the candles, and throw it upon a particular spot.

A less choice arrangement of this order, glass bottles of very thin glass filled with water, was used in both England and Holland during the eighteenth century, and doubtless earlier, by the lacemakers to throw a shaft of light on their work. Sometimes a single candle on a stand was surrounded by bottles, and the workers drawi in a circle, on chairs and stools of varying heights, had only this to make the most delicate and eye-destroying of all fabrics.

In our country the first glass factory was started in 1607 near the ill-fated Jamestown, in Virginia, and, like the Egyptians of old, we made beads. We used them for barter with the Indians. It is said that oc casionally beads are found near Jamestown, striped green and white like gooseberries, and it is thought they may have been made here.

After the various settlements were a little more secure, the necessity for glass bottles stimulated the colonists to pay bounties to men of this calling who would come and settle here. Salem, Massachusetts, a most progressive town in its early days, had a brick kiln in operation in 1629, and a glass-house in 1639. Win- dow glass was brought over here easily as ballast, but round or IioIIoav glass was more perishable; and to en courage home production, many enactments were passed in Massachusetts, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New- York. None of these early ventures were particularly successful, but by the eighteenth century many bottle factories were started, most of which have passed out of the hands of the original owners.

Our philosophy

We want every one of us to live comfortably even if they only have a small space they call home. We scan dozens of online shops for thousands of desks, cabinets, bookshelves, storage units, beds, sofabeds and more by size and colour, to find just the right one to go next to the window and turn the room into some closet space, or to find that extra long bed that is still narrow enough to squeeze through the bedroom door. From the kitchen to the bedroom, don't just live around furniture - get furniture that lives with you.
