How much space is needed in front of an armoire?

Furniture Ferret: In order for an armoire to be usable, it needs more space on the floorplan than its size alone. You need to be able to access it and be in front of it to access papers and other items stored on an armoire, and if it has doors, it should be possible to open them fully. Double doors will generally require an additional depth of half of the width of the piece, while in general, you should leave at least 40-60 cm in front of an armoire for access. This means, for example, that an armoire that is 50 cm deep needs at least 90 cm space. The good news is that this extra space does not need to be exclusive: access spaces of two or more pieces of furniture can overlap as long as this does not disrupt the flow and lead to people bumping into each other in, for example, an office.

How can I choose the best colour for an armoire?

The colour scheme in one's home can be a bit accidental, but it has considerable effect on how you feel in your space. The two things to consider for everything colour is balance and associations. Balance simply means that the colours in your home should be coordinated, so that the space looks like a unit, and not just a random collection of elements. Usual techniques to achieve this are considering a colour wheel, and selecting colours that are either quite close to each other, or relatively far, for example on different halves of the wheel (giving you complementary colours like blue and yellow). Other colour combinations are likely be somewhat jarring just based on how our eyes and brains process colour. Associations with and emotions connected to colours are equally important to keep in mind, and there is no shortage of guides for these from those by 19th-century Impressionist painters to modern interior design guides. In all likelihood these emotions are cultural and learnt, which means that they can be quite different in different cultures or just for different people. The associations are even often contradictory, making it even more difficult to use them as a guide. Blue is often associated with productivity, but also calmness, stability and even sadness. Green is undoubtedly the colour of nature, and is said to be associated with safety, luck and envy (though in other cultures this latter is yellow instead). Pink is said to bring kindness, romance, nurturing and calmness, while it was the masculine colour of choice for clothing over many decades. Red is considered to be the colour of friendship, energy, leadership, desire and revenge, which is a very wide range of feelings. But it is clear that in nature, it means danger or importance, so you probably need to put it next to a neutral colour to allow the brain to rest. These emotions are so varied that these guides all seem to boil down to just this: pause and consider what the colour means for you.

Our philosophy

We want everyone to live comfortably even if they only own a small area they call home. We scan multiple webshops for thousands of tables, cabinets, shelves, shoe cabinets, beds, armchairs and so on by size and colour, to find just the right one for you to go next to the bed and turn the room into a dressing corner, or to find that extra long sofa that is still narrow enough to squeeze through the door. From the kitchen to the living room, don't just live next to furniture - have furniture that lives with you.
