What is the best colour for a bookshelf?

Furniture Ferret: The colour scheme in your room can be a bit accidental, but it has considerable effect on the feelings you get from your room. The two main things to consider for everything colour is balance and associations. Balance means that the colours should be coordinated in some way, so that the space looks like a unit instead of a random collection of elements. This can be achieved by using a colour wheel, and selecting colours that are either quite close to each other, or relatively far, like on opposite sides of the wheel (complementary colours like red and green) or on different thirds (for example, red-green-blue). Associations with and emotions connected to colours are equally important to keep in mind. It is quite probable that these associations are cultural and learnt, which means that they can be quite different in different cultures or just for different people. The associations can even be contradictory, which makes it even more difficult to use them as a guide. Blue is often connected to productivity, but also stability, calmness and even sadness. Green is clearly the colour of nature, and is considered to evoke safety, luck and envy (though in other cultures this latter is yellow instead). White can be associated with peacefulness, cleanliness, innocence and emptiness, and, for example, mourning in India. Red is regarded as the colour of friendship, energy, leadership, desire and revenge, which is a very wide range of feelings. But it is clear that in nature, it means danger or importance, so you probably need to put it next to a calm colour to allow the eye to rest. These emotions are so varied that these guides all seem to boil down to just this: pause and consider what the colour means for you.

Questions and answers

How to measure the space to fit a bookshelf in?

Measure both the width and the depth of the space where you'd like to place a bookshelf. The most accurate way is to use a measuring tape. Hold the start down at the edge of the area, and let it run to the opposite edge. Make sure the tape is not diagonal, as otherwise you would overestimate the available space. If the distance is larger than what you can stretch to, ask someone else to assist, or split what you need to measure into multiple parts. This can be done by either holding the tape down halfway and continuing running it while letting the first end go, or by marking how far you have measured on the floor or wall, and start a new measurement. If you would not like to make a mark on the floor, you can position a pointy object like a screwdriver there instead. Don't forget to avoid dead places where the piece of furniture won't be able to go like decorative strips. Also don't forget to measure how high the space is wherever the ceiling is low like in loft rooms.

How much clearance should I leave in front of a bookshelf?

So that a bookshelf would be usable, it needs more space on the floorplan than its size. You need to be able to access it and be in front of it to access documents and other items kept on a bookshelf, and if it has doors, it should be possible to open them fully. In general, you should provide at least 40-60 cm in front of a bookshelf for access. This means, for example, that a bookshelf that is 65 cm deep needs at least 105 cm space. Fortunately, this extra room does not need to be exclusive: access spaces of two or more pieces of furniture can overlap as long as this is not expected to lead to people bumping into each other in, for example, an office setting.

How can one search for bookshelves by size?

Finding bookshelves in search engines on the web by measurements is difficult as search engines are best at finding text only. Also, when searching for bookshelves to fit a given space, a bit narrower pieces would also suit. Even if some outlets allow searching for bookshelves by size, checking many websites at the same time needs a different solution. We scour many outlets on the web and index tens of thousands of items to allow you to find the one that fits perfectly.

From the history of furniture: Lustre ware Part 5

There are hunting and guild pitchers with lustre bands on them, and frequently with borders as well, more or less ornate. On them are also scenes and devices in black or brown print, and the makers seemed to rely on the lustre bands to brighten them up.

There is much pottery and porcelain to be found here which is decorated with black or broAAm printed scenes, and set off with either bands of lustre or little leafy sprig decoration. Such ware is called " New Hall," and was made at Shelton, in Staffordshire, be fore 1825, when the works closed. Many Owners of tea-sets like the cup and saucer in Figure 238 call them "New Hall " also, although the entire decoration is in lustre.

Very pretty and graceful all such sets are — plain lustred decoration or with the prints. A favourite design in the printed ware is a mother reclining on a sofa and playing battledore and shuttlecock with a little girl. This picture is shown in the article on pitchers previously mentioned.

Figure 239 gives two more very handsome pitchers. The one on the left is called " Nautilus " pattern, and the design is painted on in rose lustre. The pitcher is marked " Wood," impressed. This Wood was one of the famous English potters avIio made so much of the "Old Blue," which is now eagerly sought. The name "Wood " alone was used as a mark between 18 and 1818, when the sons were admitted to partner ship and the signature was "E. Wood & Sons," or "E. W. & S."
