Questions and answers

How can I choose the best colour for a cabinet?

If you can choose between different colours for a cabinet that fits your space and budget, it is useful to know what the effects of the different colours are likely to be. The two main things to consider when it comes to colours is balance and associations. Balance simply means that the colours should ideally be coordinated, so that the room looks like a unit. This can be achieved by using a colour wheel, and going for colours that are either quite close to each other (colours that are only different in lightness or intensity always go together, but small differences in the actual hue can also be fine), or quite far, for example on opposite sides of the wheel (giving you complementary colours like red and green) or on different thirds (for example, red-green-blue). Other colour combinations are likely be somewhat jarring just based on how our eyes and brains understand colour. Associations with and emotions connected to colours are also important, and there are many lists for these from those by 19th-century Impressionist painters to modern interior design guides. In all likelihood these emotions are cultural and learnt, which means that they can be very different in different cultures or for different people. Blue is often connected to productivity, but also stability, calmness and even sadness. Green is clearly the colour of nature, and is said to evoke safety, luck and envy (though in other cultures this latter is yellow instead). Yellow is always a shouty colour and can evoke warmth, brightness, energy and attention (likely evoking the sun), except when it is dark and becomes brown, when it is said to be relaxing and comfortable. Red is thought of as the colour of friendship, energy, leadership, desire and anger - a very wide range of feelings. But it is clear that in nature, it signals danger or importance, so you probably need to put it next to a calm colour to allow the eye to rest. These associations point in so many directions that these guides all seem to boil down to just this: pause and consider what the colour means for you.

How do I measure the space to fit a cabinet in?

Measure both the width and the depth of the floor area where you'd like to put a cabinet. The most accurate way is to use a measuring tape. Hold the start of the tape down at the edge of the area, and let it run to the other edge. Make sure the tape is not diagonal, or else you get a value larger than the reality. If the distance is larger than what you can stretch to, ask a friend to assist, or split what you need to measure into multiple parts. You can do this by either holding the tape down partway through and continuing running it while letting the first end go, or by marking how far you have measured on the floor or wall, and reposition the tape to complete the measurement. If you want to avoid drawing on your floor, you can position a pointy object like a pencil there instead. You should avoid dead places where the piece of furniture won't be able to go like decorative strips. Also it may be necessary to take the height of the space and the item into account wherever the ceiling is low like in loft rooms.

From the history of furniture: English Pottery And Porcelain Part 4

Specimens of Chamberlain's porcelain, and some mugs, and a cup of the early Worcester are also shown (Figures 56 and 57).

Within the last year, at Cooperstown, New York, a quantity of old porcelain has come to light. A farmer was ploughing, when suddenly the plough struck some hard substance, and a moment later there was a crash as of broken crockery. Investigation proved that he had struck a wooden chest, filled with china articles. There were eighty pieces in all, and fifty were saved in a perfect condition. As for the chest, it had crumbled to bits on exposure to the air, only the rough iron lock and hinges surviving. The history of these specimens is known. They were buried one hundred and twenty-five years ago by Percifer Carr, who was employed by Colonel Edmeston, an officer in the French and Indian Wars. The Colonel received for his ser- W Adces a grant of one thousand acres, and Carr had a comfortable home on this land. Indian troubles caused him to leave for a time, and he buried his china. Among the pieces are some very choice Old Worcester, with both Hancock's and Holdship's designs, very similar to the teapot shown. Other pieces are in plain blue, and in brown and pink.

The farmer aa'Iio ploughed up these treasures, for they are almost as valuable as gold, has not been allowed to retain them, as he only rented the farm. The Owner of the property stepped in and claimed them, and after they had reposed in a bank under the care of a sheriff for some months, the court upheld his claim. Collectors from all over the country have been interested to have them come on the market.
