How can I choose the best colour for a cart?

The colour scheme in your space can be a result of necessity, but it has a great effect on how you feel in your space. The two main things to consider for everything colour is balance and associations. Balance means that the colours should be coordinated in some way, so that the space looks like a unit. Usual techniques to achieve this are considering a colour wheel, and selecting colours that are either quite close to each other (as colours that are only different in lightness or intensity do go together, but slight variations in the actual tone or hue can also work), or relatively far, for example on different halves of the wheel (complementary colours like red and green). Associations with and emotions connected to colours are equally important, and there is no shortage of lists for these from those by 19th-century Impressionist painters to modern interior design guides. In all likelihood these emotions are cultural and learnt, which means that they can be very different for different individuals. The associations are even often contradictory, making it even more difficult to use them as a guide. Blue is often connected to productivity, but also calmness, stability and even sadness. Green is undoubtedly the colour of nature, and is considered to be connected to safety, luck and envy (though in other cultures envy is yellow). Yellow is always a shouty colour and can evoke brightness, warmth, energy and attention (likely evoking the sun), except when it is dark and becomes brown, when it is thought to be a sign of comfort and relaxation. Red is thought of as the colour of friendship, willpower, leadership, desire and anger, which is a very wide range of feelings. But it is clear that in nature, it means danger or importance, so it should be put next to a calm colour to allow the brain to rest. These emotions are so different that these guidelines seem to boil down to just this: pause and consider what the colour means for you.

From the history of furniture: Chests and cupboards Part 2

But while these chests are interesting in every way, and are to be bought in this country, since it known that we are becoming the collectors of the world, is it is with homelier and less ornate articles of this class that our interest chiefly centres. When the Pilgrim Fathers and Mothers packed their scanty belongings and stowed them away in the hold of the Mayflower, their goods were mostly contained in chests, stout ones no doubt, and, I think we can say, entirely guiltless of carving. These chests for use in travelling were called" chests" or "standards," and were simple, box-like affairsship with locks and no legs, and often with handles.

There were, even in those early days, some chests brought over which stood upon legs. The legs were formed by continuing the "stiles," as those boards which hold the sides, back, and front are called. You can see them very plainly in Figure 149. The boards at top and bottom of the panels, in the top one of which is the keyhole, are called " rails." These are often carved, the stiles generally being left plain, or ornamented only with a slight moulding.

There are many chests like Figure 149 scattered over the country. This one is a pick-up near Rochester, New York, within a couple of years. It is of oak, — old English oak at that, — dark, solid, and heavy, so that the boards which make the bottom seem almost like iron. It is a joined chest. The nails which you see on the stiles were put there recently to prevent the chest from positively dropping apart from age. The date of this piece is between 1675-1700.
