How do I measure the space to fit a PC desk in?

Furniture Ferret: Measure both the width and the depth of the area where you'd like to place a PC desk. The easiest way is to use a measuring tape. Hold the start of the tape down at the edge of the area, and let it run to the other edge. Make sure the tape is not diagonal, as otherwise you would overestimate the available space. If the distance is larger than what you can stretch to, ask a friend to help, or split the distance up into multiple parts. This can be done by either holding the tape down halfway and continuing running it while letting the first end go, or by marking how far you measured on the floor or wall, and reposition the tape to complete the measurement. If you would not like to make a mark on your floor, you can position a pointy object like a pen there. Make sure to avoid dead places where the piece of furniture won't go like skirting boards. Also don't forget to take the height of the space and the item into account wherever the ceiling is low like spaces under the stairs.

How can I coordinate colours?

If you can choose from different colours for a PC desk that fits your space and budget, it is helpful to know how different colours work together. The two main things to consider for everything colour is balance and associations. Balance simply means that the colours should be coordinated in some way, so that the room looks like a unit. This can be achieved by using a colour wheel, and going for colours that are either quite close to each other (colours that are only different in intensity of lightness do go together, but small variations in the actual hue can also work), or quite far. Associations with and emotions connected to colours are equally important to keep in mind, and there is no shortage of guides for these from those by 19th-century Impressionist painters to modern interior design guides. In all likelihood these emotions are cultural and learnt, which means that they can be quite different in different cultures or just for different people. Blue is often connected to productivity, but also calmness, stability and even sadness. Green is undoubtedly the colour of nature, and is said to be connected to safety, luck and envy (though in other cultures envy is yellow). Pink is thought to bring kindness, nurturing, romance and calmness, but it was the masculine colour of choice for clothing over many decades. Red is thought of as the colour of friendship, willpower, leadership, desire and anger, which is a very wide range of emotions. But it is clear that in nature, it means danger or importance, so you probably need to put it next to a neutral colour to allow the eye to rest. These associations are so varied that these guides all seem to boil down to just this: pause and consider what the colour means for you.

From the history of furniture: Desks and secretaries Part 5

There was nothing that came under the head of light literature."

I have spoken in the chapter on Chests and Cup boards of furniture made in particular locations, or at least found there, and have shown both the Hadley and the Connecticut chest. In Figure 282 I give a picture "desk," of what is called the Massachusetts of which, recently, I have seen several examples. It does not seem a very convenient piece of furniture with that leg in the middle, but its great length must have made it possible for two persons to sit comfortably at it. This one is of mahogany, with carved legs and gilt mounts, and four shallow but wide drawers.

A desk somewhat resembling this is in the City Hall, New York, and there are quite a number in Boston and its vicinity.

To return to the bookcase-desk in Figure 281. It is about eight feet high, and the Gothic treatment of the doors makes them very ornamental. One of the marked peculiarities of this style of furniture was the use of metal mounts, made usually of handsome hand-worked or cast brass, and in finer pieces, of water gilt. Our cabinet-makers never let themselves be carried away by this florid style, and contented themselves in most cases with merely making the capitals at the tops of the pillars, ornaments, and sometimes the tips of the feet of brass. You will see them in this example. The lid of the desk folds back upon itself, and above it another lid SAAings out, revealing pigeon-holes.

Our philosophy

We want everyone to live comfortably even if they only have a small space they call home. We scan multiple webshops for thousands of desks, cabinets, shelves, shoe cabinets, beds, armchairs and more by size and colour, to find just the right one for you to go next to the window and turn the room into a practical office, or to find that extra long bed that is still narrow enough to squeeze through the bedroom door. From the kitchen to the living room, don't live around furniture - choose furniture that lives with you.

Have you heard? We also help customers in other countries. You can look for “bureaux d'ordinateur - profondeur 90 cm” in France, 90cm deep computer desks in Australia or 36 inch deep computer and pc desks in the US.
