What is the best colour for an office desk?

Furniture Ferret: The two main things to consider for everything colour is balance and associations. Balance simply means that the colours should be coordinated, so that it looks like a unit. Usual techniques to achieve this are considering a colour wheel, and choosing colours that are either quite close to each other, or quite far, like on opposite sides of the wheel (giving you complementary colours like red and green) or on different thirds (for example, red-green-blue). Associations with and emotions connected to colours are equally important to keep in mind. In all likelihood these associations are cultural and learnt, which means that they can be quite different in different cultures or just for different individuals. Blue is often connected to productivity, but also stability, calmness and even sadness. Green is undoubtedly the colour of nature, and is said to evoke safety, luck and envy (though in other cultures envy is yellow instead). White can be connected to peacefulness, cleanliness, innocence and emptiness, and, for example, mourning in India. Red is regarded as the colour of friendship, willpower, leadership, desire and anger - a very wide range of feelings. But it is clear that in nature, it means danger and importance, so you probably need to put it next to a calm colour to allow the eye to rest. These emotions are so different that these guidelines all seem to boil down to just this: pause and consider what the colour means for you.

Questions and answers

How much space do I have to leave in front of an office desk?

Finding the right place for an office desk needs a larger area than just the size of the item itself, as you will also need approx. 50-76 cm behind the chair. Keeping this area free means that you can easily push the chair back to stand up, or turn around to reach a credenza or bookshelf behind you. Together with the chair, this means keeping an area 100 cm deep free in front of an office desk. In other words, 150 cm deep office desks would need a 250 cm deep space in total. The extra area behind the chair doesn't need to be dead space, as it can also be used as the area you need to access a dresser, filing cabinet, or a bookshelf.

From the history of furniture: Desks and secretaries Part 3

Sheraton used more veneer than Chippendale, since he used inlay while Chippendale used carving, and his instructions regarding the use of it are very definite. He says, " If the veneer be very cross and unpliable, as many curls of mahogany are, it is vain to attempt the hammer. It should be shrunk and tempered well with thin glue, not with water, and if necessary the caul, used." which is the surest and best method, should be 11

By 178 there were cabinet-makers all about the Front country, turning out numbers of not only useful but ornamental articles. In 1774 the following advertisement appeared in the New York Gazette and Weekly Mercury ": Mahogany Furniture.

3 elegant desks and bookcases. 1 chest upon chest of drawers. 1 lady's dressing-chest and bookcase. 3 desks and 1 pr. card tables. 2 setts chairs. 3 Dining-tables and 5 breakfast tables. 1 clock case furnished with a good plain 8-day clock. Sundry stands, etc. The above articles are well made, and most of them are of wood of the first quality, and will be sold as low as any furniture of equal value in the city, by WlLLET AND BERASEY, Cabinet and chair makers, at the sign of the clothes press, nearly opposite the Oswego Market, at the end of Maiden Lane. There were made at this time, also, desks and bureaus with what were called block and serpentine fronts. Fig ure 271 B shows a fine example of a slant-top desk with a serpentine front. The block-front furniture was finished off square on the swelling part instead of rounded, but both block and serpentine drawers were cut from the solid block of wood. This fine piece of mahogany has the original brasses, only one handle being gone. It has the moulding in its simplest form about the drawers, and handsomely carved feet of the ball-and- claw pattern. It has a more quaint aspect in reality than is given by the photograph. This style of desk seems to have been quite popular in New England, and in the Antiquarian Rooms, at Concord, Massachusetts, is a similar desk, made by Joseph Hosmer about 1765. It is of cherry and is in an excellent state of preserva tion, but is less handsome in colour than the one show, which is in the Whipple House, at Ipswich.

Our philosophy

We aim to allow everyone to live comfortably even if they only have a small space they call home. We scour the Internet to search among thousands of tables, cabinets, bookshelves, storage units, beds, armchairs and so on by size and colour, to find just the right piece for you to go next to the window and turn the room into some closet space, or to find that extra long sofa that is still narrow enough to squeeze through the door. From the hall to the bedroom, don't live around furniture - buy furniture that lives with you.

Did you know? We also help customers in many other regions. You can look for 150cm deep desks in Australia or 60 inch deep office desks in the US.
