Questions and answers

How much floor space should you leave for a drawer unit?

One needs extra space in front of a chest of drawers in addition to the floor space occupied by the piece of furniture itself. You should leave enough room to be able to fully extend the drawers, as otherwise accessing files at the bottom end of the drawers can be uncomfrotable. Ideally you should also be able to stand in front of the unit, but if not, position the chest of drawers so you can stand at the side and work from there. We would suggest reserving as much space in front of the unit as its depth, so a 110 cm deep unit would need 220 cm in total. While drawers may not extend into the full depth of the unit, and you may not be able to pull them out fully, this is a safe estimate. Filing cabinets can be pretty deep and so may need a fair amount of clearance.

How can I coordinate colours?

The colour scheme in your home can be a bit accidental, but it has considerable effect on the feelings you get from your space. The two things to consider for everything colour is balance and associations. Balance simply means that the colours in your space should ideally be coordinated in some way, so that the room looks like a unit, and not just a random collection of elements. This can be achieved by using a colour wheel, and choosing colours that are either quite close to each other, or relatively far or on different thirds (for example, red-green-blue). Associations with and emotions connected to colours are equally important. It is quite probable that these emotions are cultural and learnt, which means that they can be quite different in different cultures or for different individuals. Blue is often connected to productivity, but also calmness, stability and even sadness. Green is undoubtedly the colour of nature, and is said to be associated with safety, luck and envy (though in other cultures this latter is yellow instead). Pink is thought to bring kindness, nurturing, romance and calmness, while it was the choice for masculine clothing over many decades. Red is considered to be the colour of friendship, energy, leadership, desire and revenge, which is a very wide range of feelings. But it is clear that in nature, it means danger and importance, so you probably need to put it next to a calm colour to allow the eye to rest. These emotions point in so many different directions that these guidelines all seem to boil down to just one piece of advice: pause and think what the colour means for you.

From the history of furniture: Brass and copper utensils Part 6

Brass And Copper Utensils Part 6

[These] belonged to Gen. Washington and were Mounternon. This pair are silver, but there were few per sons also could afford that metal, and, provided the stick was tall enough, it did not matter of what material it was made. I find in old records and inventories many references to candlesticks, and it is easy to see that they were important objects of domestic economy. As early as 1489 I find mention of a bell candlestick, the word bell referring to the shape of the base, which was somewhat in the form of a bell and very solid and heavy. In the next century the candlestick was still of enough importance to be an object of bequest, and a Mr." Thatcher of Pirton, England, gave by will to my grandson one fallowe cowe and best bed and one greate Brasse Candlesticke." To his youngest grandson he gave " one fallowe heifer with bed and payer of sheets of the thirde sorte and one Brasse Candlesticke."

The process of making the candles to go in these sticks was long and trying, but casting them in moulds was easier than dipping them. The moulds were made either of tin or pewter and would hold from two to eight candles at a time. Not every family owned a set of moulds, but in those pleasant days of village life a mould was passed about from one family to another at need, just as they passed the spoon mould when new pewter spoons had to be run.

We scan dozens of online shops for thousands of tables, cabinets, bookcases, storage units, beds, sofas and so on by size and colour, to find just the right one to go next to the window and turn the room into some closet space, or to find that extra long sofa that is still narrow enough to squeeze through the bedroom door. We also operate in many other regions. You can look for 45 inch deep chests of drawers in the US.
