What is the best colour for a chest of drawers?

Furniture Ferret: If you can choose from different colours for a chest of drawers that fits your space and budget, it is helpful to know how different colours work together. The two things to consider for everything colour is balance and associations. Balance simply means that the colours should be coordinated in some way, so that it looks like a unit. This can be achieved by using a colour wheel, and going for colours that are either quite close to each other (colours that are only different in intensity of lightness always go together, but slight differences in tone or hue can also work), or relatively far or on different thirds (for example, red-green-blue). Other colour combinations are likely be somewhat jarring because of how our eyes and brains understand colour. Associations with and emotions connected to colours are also important. It is quite probable that these associations are cultural and learnt, which means that they can be very different for different people. Blue is often connected to productivity, but also stability, calmness and even sadness. Green is clearly the colour of nature, and is said to be connected to safety, luck and envy (though in other cultures envy is yellow instead). Pink is thought to bring kindness, nurturing, romance and calmness, but it was the choice for boys' and men's clothes over many decades. Red is considered to be the colour of friendship, willpower, leadership, desire and revenge - a very wide range of feelings. But it is clear that in nature, it means danger and importance, so it should be put next to a neutral colour to allow the eye to rest. These emotions are so different that these guidelines all seem to boil down to just one piece of advice: pause and consider what the colour means for you.

Questions and answers

What is the best way to measure the space to fit a chest of drawers in?

Measure both the width and the depth of the floor area where you'd like to place a chest of drawers. The most accurate way is to use a measuring tape. Hold the start down at the edge of the area, and let it run to the other edge. If the distance is larger than what you can stretch to, ask someone else to assist, or divide what you need to measure into multiple parts. You can do this by either holding the tape down halfway and continuing running it while letting the first end go, or by marking how far you measured on the floor or wall, and reposition the tape to complete the measurement. If you would not like to draw on the floor, you can position a pointy object like a pen there. Don't forget to avoid dead places where the piece of furniture won't be able to go like decorative strips. Also don't forget to take the height of the space and the item into account wherever the ceiling is low like in loft rooms.

How do I order the 180cm wide chests of drawers by price?

On the result pages there is an option to sort the results by their price (ascending or descending), or relevance. Click or tap on the button just above the first item, after "Order by", to change how the results are ordered. Sorting by relevance shows the chest of drawers first that contains most of the search terms, while ordering by price shows the cheapest or most expensive chest of drawers at the top. Set the ordering to "Price: low to high" to see the cheapest 180cm wide chests of drawers on Furniture Ferret.

How much clearance do you need for a chest of drawers?

One needs space in front of a chest of drawers in addition to the room needed for the unit itself. You should leave enough room to be able to fully extend the drawers, as otherwise getting to files at the bottom of the drawers can be uncomfrotable. Ideally you should also be able to stand in front of the cabinet, but if this is not possible, you can try positioning the unit so you can stand at its side. At Furniture Ferret, our guide is to leave as much space in front of the cabinet as its depth, so a 30 cm deep unit would need 60 cm in total. While drawers may not extend into the full depth of the cabinet, and you may not be able to pull them out fully, this is a safe estimate. Filing cabinets are sometimes surprisingly deep and so may need a fair amount of clearance.

Our philosophy

We aim to allow everyone to live comfortably even if they only have a small area they call home. We search the Internet for thousands of tables, cabinets, shelves, shoe cabinets, beds, armchairs and so on by size, to find just the right piece for you to go next to the window and turn the room into a dressing corner, or to find that extra long sofa that is still narrow enough to squeeze through the bedroom door. From the kitchen to the bedroom, don't live next to furniture - choose furniture that lives with you.
