How can I coordinate colours?

Furniture Ferret: The colour scheme in your space can be a bit accidental, but it has considerable effect on how you feel in your space. The two things to consider when it comes to colours is balance and associations. Balance means that the colours in your space should be coordinated, so that it looks like a unit. This can be achieved by using a colour wheel, and going for colours that are either quite close to each other (colours that are only different in intensity of lightness always go together, but slight differences in hue can also work), or quite far, for example on different halves of the wheel (giving you complementary colours like blue and yellow) or on different thirds (for example, red-green-blue). Associations with and emotions connected to colours are also important to keep in mind, and there are many guides for these from those by 19th-century Impressionist painters to modern interior design guides. It is quite probable that these associations are cultural and learnt, which means that they can be quite different in different cultures or for different individuals. Blue is often associated with productivity, but also calmness, stability and even sadness. Green is clearly the colour of nature, and is considered to be connected to safety, luck and envy (though in other cultures this latter is yellow instead). White can be associated with peacefulness, innocence, cleanliness and emptiness, and, for example, mourning in India. Red is considered to be the colour of friendship, energy, leadership, desire and revenge - a very wide range of feelings. But it is clear that in nature, it means danger or importance, so it should be put next to a neutral colour to allow the brain to rest. These emotions are so varied that these guidelines seem to boil down to just one piece of advice: pause and think what the colour means for you.

Questions and answers

How can one search for chests of drawers using their width, height and length?

Finding chests of drawers in search engines on the web by measurements is not easy as search engines are best at finding words only. Also, when searching for chests of drawers to fit a given space, a bit narrower pieces would also fit. Even if some webshops allow searching for chests of drawers by measurements, searching many shops at the same time is time-consuming. Furniture Ferret scour many websites and index tens of thousands of items so you can buy the one that fits perfectly.

How much clearance should one leave in front of a drawer unit?

You need space in front of a chest of drawers in addition to the floor space occupied by the piece of furniture itself. You should leave enough room to be able to fully extend the drawers, as otherwise getting to files at the bottom end of the drawers can be tricky. Ideally you should also be able to stand in front of the cabinet, but if there is not enough space, you can try positioning the unit so you can stand at the side and work from there. At Furniture Ferret, our guide is to leave as much space in front of the chest of drawers as its depth, so a 90 cm deep piece would need 180 cm in total. While drawers may not extend into the full depth of the unit, and it may not be possible to pull them out fully, this is a safe estimate. Filing cabinets can be surprisingly deep and so can require a fair amount of space.

Our philosophy

We want to allow every one of us to live comfortably even if they only own a small space they call home. We scour the Internet to search among thousands of tables, cabinets, bookshelves, storage units, beds, sofas and more by size and colour, to find just the right one for you to go under the stairs to finally get some closet space, or to find that extra long sofa that is still narrow enough to squeeze through the door. From the hall to the bathroom, don't live next to furniture - get furniture that lives with you.
