What is the best way to measure the space to fit a fridge in?
Measure the width and the depth of the space where you'd like to put a fridge. The most accurate way is to use a measuring tape. Hold the start down at the edge of the area, and let it run to the opposite edge. If the distance is larger than what you can stretch to, ask someone else to assist, or split what you need to measure into multiple parts. This can be done by either holding the tape down halfway and continuing running it while letting the first end go, or by marking how far you have measured on the floor or wall, and start a new measurement. If you want to avoid drawing on your floor, try putting down a pointy object like a screwdriver there. Make sure to avoid dead places where the piece of furniture won't go like skirting boards. Also don't forget to take the height of the space and the item into account wherever the ceiling is low like spaces under the stairs.
How much extra space does one need around a fridge?
Most importantly, ensure that when positioning a fridge you follow all the safety regulations and instructions that come with the fridge, including leaving venting areas and safety clearances. There must also be enough space left for cables and pipes. But from strictly a usability perspective, you will require enough room in front of a fridge to be able to open its door fully and use it. The minimum clearance for this is likely to be 80 cm, so a 55 cm deep fridge will need 95 cm in total. Also consider that in many cases you will need to open the door completely, toward the side of the machine, so placing a fridge next to a wall or other obstruction may restrict your access.
We strive to allow every one of us to live comfortably even if they only have a small space they call home. We scour the Internet to search among thousands of desks, cabinets, shelves, shoe cabinets, beds, tables, sofas and so on by size, to find just the right piece to go in that unused corner and turn it into a practical office, or to find that extra long bed that is still narrow enough to squeeze through the bedroom door. From the hall to the bedroom, don't live around furniture - get furniture that lives with you.
