How to use colour psychology when choosing a fridge?

Furniture Ferret: If you can choose from different colours for a fridge that fits your space, it is helpful to know what the effects of the different colours are likely to be. The two things to consider for everything colour is balance and associations. Balance simply means that the colours in one's space should be coordinated in some way, so that the space looks like a unit. Usual techniques to achieve this are considering a colour wheel, and selecting colours that are either quite close to each other (colours that are only different in intensity of lightness do go together, but slight differences in the actual tone can also be fine), or relatively far. Other colour combinations are likely be somewhat jarring just based on how our eyes and brains understand colour. Associations with and emotions connected to colours are equally important to keep in mind. It is quite probable that these associations are cultural and learnt, which means that they can be quite different in different cultures or for different people. Blue is often connected to productivity, but also stability, calmness and even sadness. Green is clearly the colour of nature, and is considered to be associated with safety, luck and envy (though in other cultures envy is yellow instead). Pink is said to evoke kindness, nurturing, romance and calmness, while it was the choice for boys' and men's clothes over many decades. Red is considered to be the colour of friendship, willpower, leadership, desire and anger, which is a very wide range of feelings. But it is clear that in nature, it signals danger or importance, so it should be put next to a neutral colour to allow the brain to rest. These emotions point in so many different directions that these guidelines all seem to boil down to just this: pause and think what the colour means for you.

Questions and answers

Is it possible to search for fridges by width, height and length?

Finding fridges in search engines on the Internet by size is not straightforward as search engines are best at finding words only. Also, when searching for fridges to fit a given space, a bit smaller pieces would also fit. Even if some webshops allow searching for fridges by size, checking many outlets at the same time needs a different solution. We scour many webshops and list tens of thousands of products to let you buy the one that is just perfect.

What is the best way to measure the space to fit a fridge in?

Measure both the width and the depth of the floor area where you'd like to put a fridge. The easiest way is to use a measuring tape. Hold the start of the tape down at the edge of the area, and let it run to the other edge. If the distance is larger than what you can stretch to with your arms, ask someone else to assist, or divide the distance up into multiple parts. This can be done by either holding the tape down halfway and continuing running it while letting the first end go, or by marking how far you measured on the floor or wall, and reposition the tape to complete the measurement. If you want to avoid drawing on the floor, you can position a pointy object like a screwdriver there. You should avoid dead places where the piece of furniture won't go like electric sockets. Also don't forget to measure how high the space is wherever the ceiling is low like in loft rooms.

How much clearance is needed in front of a fridge?

For your safety, ensure that when placing a fridge you follow all the regulations and instructions that come with your fridge, including leaving venting areas and safety clearances. There must also be enough room left for cables and pipes. But from a usability perspective, you need enough space in front of a fridge to be able to open its door completely and use it. The minimum clearance for this is likely to be 80 cm, so for a 95 cm deep fridge you need 135 cm in total. Also consider that in many cases you will need to open the door completely, toward the side of the appliance, so placing a fridge next to a wall or other obstruction may cause problems.

Our philosophy

We aim to allow every one of us to live comfortably even if they only have a small area they call home. We scan multiple webshops for thousands of desks, cabinets, bookcases, storage units, beds, sofabeds and so on by size and colour, to find just the right one for you to go in that unused corner and turn it into a practical office, or to find that extra long sofa that is still narrow enough to squeeze through the bedroom door. From the kitchen to the bathroom, don't live around furniture - choose furniture that lives with you.

Did you know? We also operate in many other regions. You can look for 38 inch deep fridges in the US.
