How to use colour theory when choosing a hob?

Furniture Ferret: If you have the option to choose between different colours for a hob that fits your space, it is useful to know what the effects of the different colours are likely to be. The two main things to consider for everything colour is balance and associations. Balance simply means that the colours should be coordinated, so that the space looks like a unit instead of a random collection of elements. This can be achieved by using a colour wheel, and going for colours that are either quite close to each other, or relatively far, for example on different halves of the wheel (complementary colours like red and green) or on different thirds (for example, cyan-orange-purple). Associations with and emotions connected to colours are equally important, and there is no shortage of lists for these from those by 19th-century Impressionist painters to modern interior design guides. It is quite probable that these associations are cultural and learnt, which means that they can be very different in different cultures or just for different individuals. Blue is often connected to productivity, but also stability, calmness and even sadness. Green is clearly the colour of nature, and is considered to evoke safety, luck and envy (though in other cultures envy is yellow instead). White can be connected to peacefulness, cleanliness, innocence and emptiness, and, for example, mourning in India. Red is thought of as the colour of friendship, willpower, leadership, desire and revenge, which is a very wide range of emotions. But it is clear that in nature, it means danger and importance, so you probably need to put it next to a calm colour to allow the brain to rest. These emotions are so varied that these guidelines all seem to boil down to just one piece of advice: pause and see what the colour means for you.

Questions and answers

What is the best way to measure the space to fit a hob in?

Measure the width and the depth of the floor space where you'd like to place a hob. The easiest way is to use a measuring tape. Hold the start down at the edge of the area, and let it run to the opposite edge. If the distance is larger than what you can stretch to, ask someone else to assist, or divide the distance into multiple parts. This can be done by either holding the tape down halfway and continuing running it while letting the first end go, or by marking how far you measured on the floor or wall, and reposition the tape to complete the measurement. If you want to avoid drawing on the floor, you can position a pointy object like a pencil there instead. Don't forget to avoid dead places where the piece of furniture won't go like skirting boards. Also don't forget to take the height of the space and the item into account wherever the ceiling is uneven like spaces under the stairs.

Our philosophy

We strive to allow every one of us to live comfortably even if they only have a small space they call home. We scour the Internet to search among thousands of desks, cabinets, shelves, storage units, beds, sofabeds and more by size, to find just the right one to go next to the bed and turn the room into a dressing corner, or to find that extra long bed that is still narrow enough to squeeze through the bedroom door. From the hall to the bathroom, don't live around furniture - get furniture that lives with you.
