What is the best colour for a hob?

The colour scheme in one's home can be a result of necessity, but it has considerable effect on the feelings you get from your room. The two main things to consider when it comes to colours is balance and associations. Balance simply means that the colours in your home should be coordinated in some way, so that the space looks like a unit. Usual techniques to achieve this are considering a colour wheel, and choosing colours that are either quite close to each other, or relatively far, for example on different halves of the wheel (complementary colours like blue and yellow). Associations with and emotions connected to colours are equally important to keep in mind. It is quite probable that these emotions are cultural and learnt, which means that they can be quite different in different cultures or for different individuals. The associations are even often contradictory, making it even more difficult to use them as a guide. Blue is often connected to productivity, but also stability, calmness and even sadness. Green is clearly the colour of nature, and is considered to be associated with safety, luck and envy (though in other cultures this latter is yellow). Pink is said to evoke kindness, nurturing, romance and calmness, while it was the masculine colour of choice for clothing over many decades. Red is regarded as the colour of friendship, willpower, leadership, desire and revenge, which is a very wide range of emotions. But it is clear that in nature, it means danger or importance, so it should be put next to a neutral colour to allow the brain to rest. These associations are so different that these guides all seem to boil down to just one piece of advice: pause and think what the colour means for you.

Questions and answers

How do I measure the space to fit a hob in?

Measure both the width and the depth of the floor space where you'd like to place a hob. The easiest way is to use a measuring tape. Hold the start of the tape down at the edge of the area, and let it run to the opposite edge. If the distance is larger than what you can stretch to, ask a friend to assist, or divide the distance into multiple parts. You can do this by either holding the tape down halfway and continuing running it while letting the first end go, or by marking how far you have measured on the floor or wall, and reposition the tape to complete the measurement. If you would not like to draw on your floor, you can position a pointy object like a screwdriver there instead. Make sure to avoid dead places where the piece of furniture won't be able to go like skirting boards. Also don't forget to measure how high the space is wherever the ceiling is low like in loft rooms.

Our philosophy

We want everyone to live comfortably even if they only own a small area they call home. We scour the Internet to search among thousands of tables, cabinets, shelves, storage units, beds, sofas and more by size, to find just the right piece to go next to the window and turn the room into a practical office, or to find that extra long bed that is still narrow enough to squeeze through the bedroom door. From the hall to the bedroom, don't just live next to furniture - have furniture that lives with you.
