How can I choose a colour for a microwave oven?

Furniture Ferret: If you can choose between different colours for a microwave oven that fits your space and budget, it is useful to know how different colours work together. The two things to consider when it comes to colours is balance and associations. Balance simply means that the colours in your home should be coordinated in some way, so that it looks like a unit. This can be achieved by using a colour wheel, and choosing colours that are either quite close to each other (as colours that are only different in intensity of lightness do go together, but slight variations in the actual tone or hue can also work), or quite far or on different thirds (for example, red-green-blue). Other colour combinations are likely be somewhat jarring just based on how our eyes and brains understand colour. Associations with and emotions connected to colours are also important. It is quite probable that these emotions are cultural and learnt, which means that they can be quite different for different people. The associations can even be contradictory, which makes it even more difficult to use them as a guide. Blue is often associated with productivity, but also stability, calmness and even sadness. Green is clearly the colour of nature, and is said to be connected to safety, luck and envy (though in other cultures envy is yellow instead). Yellow is always a shouty colour and can evoke brightness, warmth, attention and energy (likely evoking the sun), except when it is dark and becomes brown, when it is thought to be a sign of comfort and relaxation. Red is thought of as the colour of friendship, willpower, leadership, desire and anger, which is a very wide range of emotions. But it is clear that in nature, it means danger and importance, so you probably need to put it next to a calm colour to allow the brain to rest. These associations point in so many directions that these guidelines all seem to boil down to just one piece of advice: pause and see what the colour means for you.

Is a microwave more energy efficient than a regular oven?

Furniture Ferret: The short answer is yes. You can save a real amount of money on your energy bill by using your microwave oven more frequently than the big one. Microwaves are extremely energy efficient: the electromagnetic waves they generate only heat up the food (or, more specifically, the water molecules in your food), with only a small amount of the heat and energy lost to the room. But a regular oven heats up itself and everything in it before it can heat up the food, losing a lot of the heat to the outside in the process. David Watsky at CNET estimates that using the microwave costs half of using a gas oven, and 40% of using an electric oven.

Questions and answers

How much clearance should one leave in front of a microwave oven?

Most importantly, ensure that when placing a microwave oven you observe all the safety regulations and instructions that come with the microwave oven, including venting areas and safety clearances. There should also be enough room left for cables and pipes. But from a usability point of view, you need sufficient space in front of a microwave oven to be able to open its door completely and use it. For this you will likely need 80 cm at minimum, so for a 50 cm deep microwave oven you need 90 cm in total. Also consider that in many cases you will need to open the door completely, to the side of the machine, so placing a microwave oven next to a wall or other obstruction may cause problems.

Our philosophy

We aim to allow every one of us to live comfortably even if they only own a small area they call home. We scan multiple webshops for thousands of desks, cabinets, shelves, storage units, beds, sofabeds and so on by size and colour, to find just the right one for you to go next to the bed and turn the room into a dressing corner, or to find that extra long sofa that is still narrow enough to squeeze through the door. From the kitchen to the bedroom, don't just live next to furniture - choose furniture that lives with you.

Did you know? We also help customers in other countries. You can look for 50cm deep microwave ovens in Australia or 20 inch deep microwave ovens in the US.
