How can one coordinate colours?

Furniture Ferret: The two main things to consider when it comes to colours is balance and associations. Balance simply means that the colours should be coordinated in some way, so that the space looks like a unit. This can be achieved by using a colour wheel, and going for colours that are either quite close to each other, or relatively far, for example on opposite sides of the wheel (complementary colours like blue and yellow). Associations with and emotions connected to colours are also important to keep in mind. In all likelihood these emotions are cultural and learnt, which means that they can be very different in different cultures or just for different people. Blue is often connected to productivity, but also stability, calmness and even sadness. Green is clearly the colour of nature, and is said to be associated with safety, luck and envy (though in other cultures this latter is yellow instead). White can be connected to peacefulness, cleanliness, innocence and emptiness, and, for example, mourning in India. Red is thought of as the colour of friendship, willpower, leadership, desire and anger - a very wide range of feelings. But it is clear that in nature, it means danger or importance, so you probably need to put it next to a neutral colour to allow the eye to rest. These emotions are so varied that these guides all seem to boil down to just this: pause and see what the colour means for you.

Questions and answers

How much room should one leave in front of an armoire?

In order for an armoire to be usable, it requires more space than just its proper size. You need to be able to access it and stand in front of it to get to the papers and other items kept on an armoire, and if an armoire has doors, they need to be able to be opened. Double doors will require an additional depth of half of the width of the item, while in general, you will need at least 40-60 cm in front of an armoire for access. This means, for example, an armoire that is 40 cm deep needs at least 80 cm space. The good news is that this extra space does not need to be exclusive: access spaces of two or more pieces of furniture can overlap as long as this does not disrupt the flow and lead to people bumping into each other in, for example, an office setting.

What is the best way to measure the space to fit an armoire in?

Measure both the width and the depth of the floor area where you'd like to place an armoire. The most accurate way is to use a measuring tape. Hold the start down at the edge of the area, and let it run to the opposite edge. If the distance is larger than what you can stretch to, ask a friend to help, or split the distance into multiple parts. This can be done by either holding the tape down partway through and continuing running it while letting the first end go, or by marking how far you have measured on the floor or wall, and reposition the tape to complete the measurement. If you want to avoid drawing on the floor, try putting down a pointy object like a pair of scissors there instead. You should avoid dead places where the piece of furniture won't go like electric sockets. Also don't forget to measure how high the space is wherever the ceiling is low like in loft rooms.

From the history of furniture: Old Pewter Part 3

" out with shining pewter all Such a complete set was the end and aim of every good housekeeper. When the pewter had been once gathered together the keeping of it bright was quite a serious matter. This duty fell to the children's share, and on Saturday morn ings they were sent bright and early to the meadows for a supply of " horse-tail " or scouring-rush, stems of which polished the pewter without scratching it. The mothers kept an eye to the use of much " elbow- grease," and there was no escaping for play till the task was well accomplished.

There were more articles of pewter than is ally supposed. Besides plates, platters, tankards, por ringers, spoons, pitchers, and basins there were buckles for shoe and knee, coffee-urns, hot-water dishes, lamps, and candlesticks.

In Figure 294 is a variety of these articles. The coffee-urn is a solid old piece, and belonged to the grandfather of Ralph Waldo Emerson, who built J5L ioL Jf$i the " Old Manse " at Concord, Massachusetts, 1765.

The owner of the coffee-urn was a sturdy and loyal patriot, and we love to think he had a good strong cup of hot coffee before he went out on that historic 19th of April to encourage his parishioners to fight for their liberties and homes. lions'

Our philosophy

We want every one of us to live comfortably even if they only have a small space they call home. We scour the Internet to search among thousands of desks, cabinets, shelves, shoe cabinets, beds, sofabeds and so on by size, to find just the right piece for you to go in that unused corner and turn it into a practical office, or to find that extra long sofa that is still narrow enough to squeeze through the bedroom door. From the kitchen to the bathroom, don't live next to furniture - buy furniture that lives with you.
