What is the best way to measure the space to fit a chest of drawers in?

Furniture Ferret: Measure both the width and the depth of the space where you'd like to put a chest of drawers. The easiest way is to use a measuring tape. Hold the beginning of the tape down at the edge of the area, and let it run to the opposite edge. If the distance is larger than what you can stretch to, ask a friend to help, or split what you need to measure into multiple parts. This can be done by either holding the tape down partway through and continuing running it while letting the first end go, or by marking how far you have measured on the floor or wall, and reposition the tape to complete the measurement. If you want to avoid drawing on the floor, you can position a pointy object like a pen there instead. Don't forget to avoid dead places where the piece of furniture won't go like skirting boards. Also don't forget to measure how high the space is wherever the ceiling is low like spaces under the stairs.

How can I choose a colour for a chest of drawers?

Furniture Ferret: The two things to consider when it comes to colours is balance and associations. Balance simply means that the colours should be coordinated in some way, so that the room looks like a unit. Usual techniques to achieve this are considering a colour wheel, and going for colours that are either quite close to each other, or quite far, like on different halves of the wheel (giving you complementary colours like red and green) or on different thirds (for example, cyan-orange-purple). Other colour combinations are likely be somewhat jarring because of how our eyes and brains process colour. Associations with and emotions connected to colours are also important, and there is no shortage of guides for these from those by 19th-century Impressionist painters to modern interior design guides. In all likelihood these associations are cultural and learnt, which means that they can be quite different in different cultures or just for different individuals. Blue is often connected to productivity, but also calmness, stability and even sadness. Green is clearly the colour of nature, and is said to evoke safety, luck and envy (though in other cultures this latter is yellow instead). Yellow is always a shouty colour and can evoke warmth, brightness, energy and attention (likely evoking the sun), except when it is dark and becomes brown, when it is thought to be relaxing and comfortable. Red is regarded as the colour of friendship, energy, leadership, desire and anger, which is a very wide range of emotions. But it is clear that in nature, it means danger and importance, so you probably need to put it next to a calm colour to allow the eye to rest. These emotions are so different that these guidelines seem to boil down to just this: pause and consider what the colour means for you.

Questions and answers

How do I search for chests of drawers on Furniture Ferret?

Searching for chests of drawers on Furniture Ferret is easy. Tap on the search button at the right of the header, then enter any keywords you are looking for, like "bed", "cabinet with mirror" or "yellow sofa". Use the sliders to specify the highest and lowest values for the width, height and depth (length) and the price you are interested in. Press "Go!" to see all matching items. Easy!

How much space should I leave in front of a drawer unit?

You need space in front of a chest of drawers in addition to the floor space needed for the unit itself. This is to be able to fully extend the drawers, as otherwise accessing items at the bottom of the drawers can be tricky. If possible you should also be able to stand in front of the unit, but if not, position the chest of drawers so you can stand at the side and work from there. We would suggest leaving as much space in front of the chest of drawers as its depth, so a 40 cm deep cabinet would need 80 cm in total. While drawers may not extend to the full depth of the unit, and you may not be able to pull them out fully, this is a safe estimate. Filing cabinets are sometimes pretty deep and so can require a fair amount of space.

Our philosophy

We strive to allow everyone to live comfortably even if they only own a small area they call home. We scour the Internet for thousands of tables, cabinets, shelves, shoe cabinets, beds, armchairs and more by size, to find just the right piece to go next to the bed and turn the room into some closet space, or to find that extra long sofa that is still narrow enough to squeeze through the door. From the hall to the bedroom, don't just live next to furniture - choose furniture that lives with you.
