Questions and answers

What is the best way to measure the space to fit an oven or cooker in?

Measure both the width and the depth of the area where you'd like to put an oven or cooker. The easiest way is to use a measuring tape. Hold the start of the tape down at the edge of the area, and let it run to the opposite edge. If the distance is larger than what you can stretch to with your arms, ask a friend to help, or divide the distance into multiple parts. This can be done by either holding the tape down halfway and continuing running it while letting the first end go, or by marking how far you have measured on the floor or wall, and start a new measurement. If you want to avoid drawing on your floor, try putting down a pointy object like a pair of scissors there instead. You should avoid dead places where the piece of furniture won't go like pipes. Also don't forget to take the height of the space and the item into account wherever the ceiling is low like spaces under the stairs.

How can I coordinate colours?

The two things to consider for everything colour is balance and associations. Balance means that the colours should ideally be coordinated, so that the room looks like a unit, and not just a random collection of elements. This can be achieved by using a colour wheel, and going for colours that are either quite close to each other, or relatively far, like on different halves of the wheel (giving you complementary colours like red and green) or on different thirds (for example, red-green-blue). Associations with and emotions connected to colours are equally important, and there is no shortage of guides for these from those by 19th-century Impressionist painters to modern interior design guides. It is quite probable that these associations are cultural and learnt, which means that they can be quite different in different cultures or just for different people. Blue is often associated with productivity, but also calmness, stability and even sadness. Green is undoubtedly the colour of nature, and is said to evoke safety, luck and envy (though in other cultures envy is yellow instead). White can be associated with peacefulness, cleanliness, innocence and emptiness, and, for example, mourning in India. Red is thought of as the colour of friendship, energy, leadership, desire and anger - a very wide range of emotions. But it is clear that in nature, it signals danger or importance, so it should be put next to a neutral colour to allow the eye to rest. These associations point in so many directions that these guidelines all seem to boil down to just this: pause and consider what the colour means for you.

Does a microwave oven use less energy than a traditional oven?

The short answer is yes. You can save a real amount of money on your energy bill by using your microwave oven more frequently than the big one. Microwaves are extremely energy efficient: the electromagnetic waves they generate only heat up the food (or, more specifically, the water molecules in your food), with only a small amount of the heat and energy lost to the room. But a regular oven heats up itself and everything in it before it can heat up the food, losing a lot of the heat to the outside in the process. David Watsky at CNET estimates that using the microwave costs half of using a gas oven, and 40% of using an electric oven.

Our philosophy

We want to allow everyone to live comfortably even if they only have a small space they call home. We scan dozens of online shops for thousands of desks, cabinets, bookshelves, storage units, beds, armchairs and more by size, to find just the right piece for you to go in that unused corner and turn it into a practical office, or to find that extra long bed that is still narrow enough to squeeze through the door. From the kitchen to the bathroom, don't just live around furniture - have furniture that lives with you.

Did you know? We also help customers in other countries. You can look for 90cm wide ovens and cookers in Australia.
