How to use colour theory when choosing a radiator?

Furniture Ferret: If you can choose from different colours for a radiator that fits your space, it is useful to know how different colours work together. The two main things to consider when it comes to colours is balance and associations. Balance simply means that the colours should be coordinated in some way, so that the space looks like a unit. Usual techniques to achieve this are considering a colour wheel, and selecting colours that are either quite close to each other (as colours that are only different in intensity of lightness always go together, but small variations in hue can also work), or relatively far. Associations with and emotions connected to colours are also important to keep in mind, and there are many lists for these from those by 19th-century Impressionist painters to modern interior design guides. It is quite probable that these emotions are cultural and learnt, which means that they can be quite different in different cultures or for different individuals. Blue is often connected to productivity, but also stability, calmness and even sadness. Green is undoubtedly the colour of nature, and is said to evoke safety, luck and envy (though in other cultures envy is yellow instead). Yellow is always a shouty colour and can evoke brightness, warmth, energy and attention (likely evoking the sun), except when it is dark and becomes brown, when it is thought to be a sign of comfort and relaxation. Red is considered to be the colour of friendship, energy, leadership, desire and anger, which is a very wide range of emotions. But it is clear that in nature, it means danger and importance, so you probably need to put it next to a neutral colour to allow the eye to rest. These emotions point in so many different directions that these guidelines all seem to boil down to just this: pause and see what the colour means for you.

Questions and answers

How to measure the space to fit a radiator in?

Measure the width and the depth of the space where you'd like to put a radiator. The easiest way is to use a measuring tape. Hold the beginning of the tape down at the edge of the area, and let it run to the other edge. If the distance is larger than what you can stretch to with your arms, ask a friend to help, or split the distance into multiple parts. This can be done by either holding the tape down halfway and continuing running it while letting the first end go, or by marking how far you have measured on the floor or wall, and reposition the tape to complete the measurement. If you would not like to make a mark on the floor, try putting down a pointy object like a pencil there. Make sure to avoid dead places where the piece of furniture won't go like pipes. Also don't forget to take the height of the space and the item into account wherever the ceiling is uneven like spaces under the stairs.

Our philosophy

We strive to allow everyone to live comfortably even if they only have a small area they call home. We scan multiple webshops for thousands of desks, cabinets, bookcases, storage units, beds, sofas and more by size and colour, to find just the right one to go next to the window and turn the room into a practical office, or to find that extra long sofa that is still narrow enough to squeeze through the bedroom door. From the hall to the living room, don't just live next to furniture - have furniture that lives with you.
