Is it possible to find fridges by size?

Furniture Ferret: Finding fridges in search engines on the web by size is not easy as search engines are best at finding words only. Also, when searching for fridges to fit a given space, somewhat shallower items would also be suitable. Even if some outlets allow searching for fridges by measurements, checking many outlets at the same time is time-consuming. Our systems scour many websites on the Internet and index thousands of items so you are able to get the one that is just perfect.

How do I measure the space to fit a fridge in?

Furniture Ferret: Measure both the width and the depth of the floor area where you'd like to place a fridge. The most accurate way is to use a measuring tape. Hold the start of the tape down at the edge of the area, and let it run to the other edge. If the distance is larger than what you can stretch to, ask a friend to assist, or divide the distance up into multiple parts. You can do this by either holding the tape down partway through and continuing running it while letting the first end go, or by marking how far you measured on the floor or wall, and reposition the tape to complete the measurement. If you would not like to draw on your floor, try putting down a pointy object like a pen there instead. You should avoid dead places where the piece of furniture won't be able to go like skirting boards. Also it may be necessary to take the height of the space and the item into account wherever the ceiling is uneven.

Questions and answers

How much extra space do you need in front of a fridge?

Most importantly, ensure that when positioning a fridge you follow all the safety regulations and instructions that come with the fridge, including leaving venting areas and safety clearances. There must also be enough room left for plugs, cables and pipes. But from a usability point of view, you will require enough space in front of a fridge to be able to open its door fully and use it. For this you will likely need 80 cm at minimum, so for a 50 cm deep fridge you need 90 cm in total. Also keep in mind that in many cases you will need to open the door completely, to the side of the appliance, so placing a fridge next to a wall may not work.

How to use colour theory when choosing a fridge?

If you can choose from different colours for a fridge that fits your space, it is helpful to know what the effects of the different colours are likely to be. The two things to consider when it comes to colours is balance and associations. Balance simply means that the colours in one's home should be coordinated in some way, so that it looks like a unit, and not just a random collection of elements. This can be achieved by using a colour wheel, and going for colours that are either quite close to each other (as colours that are only different in lightness or intensity always go together, but slight differences in the actual tone can also work), or relatively far, for example on opposite sides of the wheel (giving you complementary colours like blue and yellow). Other colour combinations are likely be somewhat jarring because of how our eyes and brains process colour. Associations with and emotions connected to colours are also important. In all likelihood these emotions are cultural and learnt, which means that they can be quite different in different cultures or just for different individuals. Blue is often connected to productivity, but also calmness, stability and even sadness. Green is undoubtedly the colour of nature, and is considered to evoke safety, luck and envy (though in other cultures envy is yellow). White can be connected to peacefulness, cleanliness, innocence and emptiness, and, for example, mourning in India. Red is thought of as the colour of friendship, energy, leadership, desire and revenge, which is a very wide range of emotions. But it is clear that in nature, it signals danger or importance, so it should be put next to a neutral colour to allow the brain to rest. These associations point in so many directions that these guidelines seem to boil down to just one piece of advice: pause and consider what the colour means for you.

Our philosophy

We aim to allow everyone to live comfortably even if they only have a small space they call home. We search the Internet for thousands of desks, cabinets, shelves, shoe cabinets, beds, sofas and so on by size, to find just the right piece for you to go under the stairs to finally get a dressing corner, or to find that extra long sofa that is still narrow enough to squeeze through the door. From the kitchen to the living room, don't live next to furniture - buy furniture that lives with you.

We also help customers in other countries. You can visit red fridges in the US.
