The colour scheme in one's home can be a result of necessity, but it has a great effect on the feelings you get from your room. The two things to consider when it comes to colours is balance and associations. Balance simply means that the colours should ideally be coordinated in some way, so that it looks like a unit instead of a random collection of elements. This can be achieved by using a colour wheel, and choosing colours that are either quite close to each other, or relatively far. Associations with and emotions connected to colours are also important to keep in mind, and there is no shortage of lists for these from those by 19th-century Impressionist painters to modern interior design guides. It is quite probable that these emotions are cultural and learnt, which means that they can be quite different in different cultures or for different individuals. Blue is often associated with productivity, but also stability, calmness and even sadness. Green is clearly the colour of nature, and is considered to be connected to safety, luck and envy (though in other cultures this latter is yellow). Yellow is always a shouty colour and can evoke brightness, warmth, attention and energy (likely because of the sun), except when it is dark and becomes brown, when it is thought to be relaxing and comfortable. Red is thought of as the colour of friendship, willpower, leadership, desire and revenge - a very wide range of emotions. But it is clear that in nature, it signals danger or importance, so it should be put next to a calm colour to allow the eye to rest. These emotions are so different that these guidelines all seem to boil down to just one piece of advice: pause and think what the colour means for you.
So that shelves would be usable, it requires more space on the floorplan than just its proper size. One needs to be able to access it and stand in front of it to get to the books and other items kept on shelves, and if it has doors, it should be possible to open them fully. Double doors will generally require an additional depth of half of the width of the piece, but in general, you should provide at least 40-60 cm in front of shelves for access. This means, for example, shelves that is 50 cm deep needs at least 90 cm space. The good news is that this extra room does not need to be exclusive: access spaces of two or more pieces of furniture can overlap as long as this is not expected to lead to people bumping into each other in, for example, an office.
We want to allow everyone to live comfortably even if they only have a small space they call home. We search the Internet for thousands of tables, cabinets, shelves, storage units, beds, armchairs and so on by size and colour, to find just the right piece to go next to the bed and turn the room into a dressing corner, or to find that extra long sofa that is still narrow enough to squeeze through the bedroom door. From the hall to the bathroom, don't just live around furniture - get furniture that lives with you.
