What is the best way to measure the space to fit shelves in?

Furniture Ferret: Measure the width and the depth of the floor area where you'd like to place shelves. The easiest way is to use a measuring tape. Hold the start down at the edge of the area, and let it run to the opposite edge. Make sure the tape is not diagonal, or else you would overestimate the available space. If the distance is larger than what you can stretch to, ask someone else to assist, or split the distance up into multiple parts. This can be done by either holding the tape down halfway and continuing running it while letting the first end go, or by marking how far you have measured on the floor or wall, and start a new measurement. If you want to avoid drawing on your floor, you can position a pointy object like a pair of scissors there. Make sure to avoid dead places where the piece of furniture won't be able to go like pipes. Also it may be necessary to take the height of the space and the item into account wherever the ceiling is low.

Questions and answers

How much space is needed in front of shelves?

In order for shelves to be usable, it requires more space on the floorplan than just its size. One needs to be able to access it and be in front of it to get to the documents and other items stored on shelves, and if shelves has doors, it should be possible to open them. Double doors will require an additional depth of half of the width of the item, but in general, you should provide 40-60 cm in front of shelves for access. This means, for example, shelves that is 60 cm deep needs at least 100 cm space. Fortunately, this extra room does not need to be exclusive: access spaces of two or more pieces of furniture can overlap as long as this is not expected to lead to people bumping into each other in, for example, an office setting.

What is the best colour for shelves?

The two things to consider when it comes to colours is balance and associations. Balance simply means that the colours in one's room should be coordinated in some way, so that it looks like a unit. Usual techniques to achieve this are considering a colour wheel, and going for colours that are either quite close to each other (as colours that are only different in intensity of lightness always go together, but slight variations in hue can also work), or relatively far. Associations with and emotions connected to colours are also important to keep in mind, and there is no shortage of lists for these from those by 19th-century Impressionist painters to modern interior design guides. In all likelihood these associations are cultural and learnt, which means that they can be very different in different cultures or just for different individuals. The associations can even be contradictory, making it even more difficult to use them as a guide. Blue is often connected to productivity, but also stability, calmness and even sadness. Green is clearly the colour of nature, and is considered to be connected to safety, luck and envy (though in other cultures envy is yellow). Pink is considered to evoke kindness, nurturing, romance and calmness, while it was the choice for boys' and men's clothes over many decades. Red is thought of as the colour of friendship, willpower, leadership, desire and revenge - a very wide range of feelings. But it is clear that in nature, it means danger and importance, so it should be put next to a calm colour to allow the brain to rest. These associations are so different that these guides seem to boil down to just this: pause and see what the colour means for you.

From the history of furniture: Lustre ware Part 4

Sunderland and Newcastle are usually classed to gether, and the earliest pot works at these places were opened between 1730 and 1740.

About 1755 Mr. Byers established works at New castle, and in 1762 Messrs. Christopher Thompson and John Maling erected potteries near Sunderland at North Hylton.

In 1817 Messrs. Dawson, and also Messrs. Phillips, opened factories at Hylton-on-Tyne, and at Sunder land and Southwick Messrs. Scott and Company built potteries in 1789, while the Moores built there in 1803. Early in the nineteenth century Dixon, Austin and Company had potteries in the neighbourhood of Sun derland. The pieces made at Newcastle often bear the names of Sewell and Donkin, or of Thomas Fell and Company.

The Newcastle and Sunderland pottery somewhat resembles Staffordshire ware, but is coarser and not so carefully finished. It has a decidedly yellowish colour, and nearly all of the subjects used for decoration have a nautical flavour, showing that they were chiefly used by sailors. There is something breezy, if rather coarse, about the drinking vessels of this ware, and we can imagine the sailors home from a cruise drinking from them and roaring out their choruses, and looking down into the mugs, so many of which had in their interiors a very naturalistic frog.

The most famous pattern ever made at these pot teries was the great bridge over the Wear, begun in 1793 and finished in 1796. One of these jugs is shown in Figure 233. The other jug shown in this picture is the handsomest rose lustre jug I have ever seen. Even though the body of the pitcher is somewhat dis coloured by hard usage, the picture of the ruin comes out in great beauty, the shades varying from a deep crimson to a pale pink, while over the whole plays that lustrous iridescence characteristic of gold lustre. On man}' jugs the patterns used were grotesque, crude m colour, and badly drawn. This design is quite charming.

Our philosophy

We aim to allow every one of us to live comfortably even if they only have a small area they call home. We scour the Internet for thousands of tables, cabinets, bookshelves, storage units, beds, sofabeds and so on by size and colour, to find just the right one to go in that unused corner and turn it into a dressing corner, or to find that extra long bed that is still narrow enough to squeeze through the bedroom door. From the hall to the bedroom, don't live around furniture - buy furniture that lives with you.

Did you know? We also help customers in other countries. You can visit “Étagères - largeur 160 cm” in France, “baldas de 160 cm de ancho” in Spain or 64 inch wide shelves in the US.
