Questions and answers

How can I choose a colour for shelves?

If you can choose between different colours for shelves that fits your space, it is helpful to know what the effects of the different colours are likely to be. The two main things to consider for everything colour is balance and associations. Balance simply means that the colours in one's space should be coordinated in some way, so that it looks like a unit. This can be achieved by using a colour wheel, and going for colours that are either quite close to each other (colours that are only different in lightness or intensity always go together, but slight differences in tone can also work), or quite far, like on different halves of the wheel (giving you complementary colours like red and green) or on different thirds (for example, cyan-orange-purple). Other colour combinations are likely be somewhat jarring because of how our eyes and brains understand colour. Associations with and emotions connected to colours are equally important to keep in mind, and there is no shortage of lists for these from those by 19th-century Impressionist painters to modern interior design guides. In all likelihood these emotions are cultural and learnt, which means that they can be quite different in different cultures or just for different people. The associations can even be contradictory, which makes it even more difficult to use them as a guide. Blue is often associated with productivity, but also calmness, stability and even sadness. Green is clearly the colour of nature, and is considered to evoke safety, luck and envy (though in other cultures this latter is yellow). White can be connected to peacefulness, innocence, cleanliness and emptiness, and, for example, mourning in India. Red is regarded as the colour of friendship, willpower, leadership, desire and revenge, which is a very wide range of feelings. But it is clear that in nature, it signals danger or importance, so you probably need to put it next to a neutral colour to allow the eye to rest. These emotions point in so many different directions that these guidelines seem to boil down to just one piece of advice: pause and see what the colour means for you.

How can I search on Furniture Ferret?

Searching on Furniture Ferret is simple. Click on the search button at the right of the header, then enter any keywords you are looking for, for example, "bookshelf", "cabinet with mirror" or "rustic stool". Drag the two handles on the sliders to enter the highest and lowest possible values for the width, height and depth (length) and the price you are interested in. Press "Go!" to see all matching items. That's all!

How to measure the space to fit shelves in?

Measure the width and the depth of the floor area where you'd like to put shelves. The easiest way is to use a measuring tape. Hold the start down at the edge of the area, and let it run to the opposite edge. If the distance is larger than what you can stretch to, ask someone else to help, or divide what you need to measure into multiple parts. This can be done by either holding the tape down partway through and continuing running it while letting the first end go, or by marking how far you have measured on the floor or wall, and reposition the tape to complete the measurement. If you want to avoid drawing on your floor, you can position a pointy object like a pencil there instead. Don't forget to avoid dead places where the piece of furniture won't be able to go like electric sockets. Also don't forget to take the height of the space and the item into account wherever the ceiling is low like spaces under the stairs.

Our philosophy

We aim to allow every one of us to live comfortably even if they only have a small space they call home. We scour the Internet for thousands of tables, cabinets, bookshelves, storage units, beds, sofabeds and more by size, to find just the right one to go next to the bed and turn the room into a practical office, or to find that extra long sofa that is still narrow enough to squeeze through the door. From the hall to the bathroom, don't just live next to furniture - have furniture that lives with you.

We are also present in many other countries. You can look for 180cm wide shelves in Australia, “baldas de 180 cm de ancho” in Spain, 72 inch wide shelves in the US or “Étagères - largeur 180 cm” in France.
