How much space should I leave in front of shelves?

Furniture Ferret: In order for shelves to be usable, it requires more space on the floorplan than its proper size. You need to be able to access it and be in front of it to get to the papers and other items stored on shelves, and if it has doors, it should be possible to open them. Double doors will generally need an additional depth of half of the width of the item, and in general, you should leave 40-60 cm in front of shelves for access. This means, for example, shelves that is 40 cm deep needs at least 80 cm space. Fortunately, this extra room does not need to be exclusive: access spaces of two or more pieces of furniture can overlap as long as this is not expected to disrupt the flow and lead to people bumping into each other in, for example, an office setting.

Questions and answers

How to use colour psychology when choosing shelves?

The two things to consider for everything colour is balance and associations. Balance simply means that the colours in one's space should ideally be coordinated in some way, so that the space looks like a unit instead of a random collection of elements. Usual techniques to achieve this are considering a colour wheel, and selecting colours that are either quite close to each other (colours that are only different in intensity of lightness always go together, but small variations in the actual tone can also be fine), or quite far, like on opposite sides of the wheel (complementary colours like red and green) or on different thirds (for example, cyan-orange-purple). Other colour combinations are likely be somewhat jarring just based on how our eyes and brains understand colour. Associations with and emotions connected to colours are also important to keep in mind, and there is no shortage of lists for these from those by 19th-century Impressionist painters to modern interior design guides. It is quite probable that these associations are cultural and learnt, which means that they can be quite different in different cultures or for different people. Blue is often associated with productivity, but also calmness, stability and even sadness. Green is clearly the colour of nature, and is said to be connected to safety, luck and envy (though in other cultures envy is yellow instead). Pink is thought to evoke kindness, nurturing, romance and calmness, but it was the choice for masculine clothing over many decades. Red is considered to be the colour of friendship, energy, leadership, desire and revenge - a very wide range of emotions. But it is clear that in nature, it signals danger or importance, so you probably need to put it next to a calm colour to allow the eye to rest. These associations point in so many different directions that these guides all seem to boil down to just one piece of advice: pause and consider what the colour means for you.

How do I search for shelves on Furniture Ferret?

Searching for shelves on Furniture Ferret is simple. Click on the search button in the header, then type any keywords you are looking for, for example, "desk", "bathroom cabinet" or "yellow sofa". Drag the two handles on the sliders to enter the minimum and maximum for the width, height and depth (length) and the price you are interested in. Click on "Go!" to see the results. That's all!

What is a reasonable price for shelves?

The average price of shelves in this category is £332.15. A good way to see whether an item is priced more or less than expected is to compare it to the median price. For the shelves here the median is £300, that is, 50% of them is priced above this, and 50% below. Most of the shelves in this section cost from £140 to 555 British pounds. Only 10% of products cost more or less than the above values.

Our philosophy

We want to allow every one of us to live comfortably even if they only have a small space they call home. We search the Internet for thousands of desks, cabinets, bookshelves, shoe cabinets, beds, sofabeds and more by size, to find just the right one for you to go next to the window and turn the room into a dressing corner, or to find that extra long sofa that is still narrow enough to squeeze through the door. From the hall to the living room, don't live next to furniture - have furniture that lives with you.

We are also present in many other regions. You can look for “baldas de 210 cm de ancho” in Spain, 84 inch wide shelves in the US, “Étagères - largeur 210 cm” in France or 210cm wide shelves in Australia.
