How to choose a colour for a microwave oven?

Furniture Ferret: If you can choose from different colours for a microwave oven that fits your space and budget, it is helpful to know how different colours work together. The two things to consider when it comes to colours is balance and associations. Balance simply means that the colours should ideally be coordinated in some way, so that the space looks like a unit. This can be achieved by using a colour wheel, and going for colours that are either quite close to each other (colours that are only different in lightness or intensity always go together, but small differences in the actual tone can also work), or quite far, like on different halves of the wheel (giving you complementary colours like red and green) or on different thirds (for example, cyan-orange-purple). Associations with and emotions connected to colours are equally important, and there is no shortage of lists for these from those by 19th-century Impressionist painters to modern interior design guides. It is quite probable that these emotions are cultural and learnt, which means that they can be very different for different individuals. The associations can even be contradictory, making it even more difficult to use them as a guide. Blue is often connected to productivity, but also calmness, stability and even sadness. Green is undoubtedly the colour of nature, and is said to be associated with safety, luck and envy (though in other cultures this latter is yellow instead). Pink is said to bring kindness, nurturing, romance and calmness, while it was the masculine colour of choice for clothing over many decades. Red is considered to be the colour of friendship, energy, leadership, desire and revenge, which is a very wide range of feelings. But it is clear that in nature, it means danger and importance, so it should be put next to a neutral colour to allow the eye to rest. These associations point in so many different directions that these guides seem to boil down to just one piece of advice: pause and think what the colour means for you.

Questions and answers

How do I measure the space to fit a microwave oven in?

Measure both the width and the depth of the area where you'd like to put a microwave oven. The easiest way is to use a measuring tape. Hold the start of the tape down at the edge of the area, and let it run to the other edge. Make sure the tape is parallel to the side of the space, or else you get a value larger than the reality. If the distance is larger than what you can stretch to with your arms, ask a friend to help, or split what you need to measure up into multiple parts. This can be done by either holding the tape down halfway and continuing running it while letting the first end go, or by marking how far you have measured on the floor or wall, and start a new measurement. If you want to avoid drawing on the floor, you can position a pointy object like a screwdriver there. You should avoid dead places where the piece of furniture won't go like decorative strips. Also don't forget to measure the height of the space wherever the ceiling is low like spaces under the stairs.

We scour the Internet to search among thousands of desks, cabinets, bookcases, storage units, beds, sofabeds and so on by size and colour, to find just the right piece for you to go next to the bed and turn the room into some closet space, or to find that extra long sofa that is still narrow enough to squeeze through the door. From the kitchen to the bathroom, don't live around furniture - buy furniture that lives with you.
