What is the best way to measure the space to fit a table in?

Measure both the width and the depth of the area where you'd like to place a table. The most accurate way is to use a measuring tape. Hold the start down at the edge of the area, and let it run to the opposite edge. If the distance is larger than what you can stretch to, ask a friend to help, or divide the distance up into multiple parts. You can do this by either holding the tape down halfway and continuing running it while letting the first end go, or by marking how far you measured on the floor or wall, and start a new measurement. If you want to avoid drawing on the floor, you can position a pointy object like a screwdriver there. Make sure to avoid dead places where the piece of furniture won't be able to go like electric sockets. Also it may be necessary to measure how high the space is wherever the ceiling is uneven.

Questions and answers

How can I find tables by width, height and length?

Finding tables in search engines on the web by size is not straightforward as search engines are best at finding words only. Also, when searching for tables to fit a given space, slightly smaller pieces would also fit. Even if some webshops allow searching for tables by measurements, searching many webshops at the same time is time-consuming. Furniture Ferret to the rescue! Our systems scan many shops and index tens of thousands of products to allow you to find the one that fits perfectly.

How do I spot a bargain when buying a table?

240.07 British pounds is the average price of tables that match your search. You can check what the expected price of a product in this section is by looking at the median value. The median price is £74.95 which means that exactly half of the tables costs more and half costs less. Most of the tables that match your search cost from £37.99 to £891. Only 10% of products cost more or less than these two values.

How much free space do I have to leave in front of a table?

Placing a table needs more space than just that occupied by the item itself, as you will also need about 50-76 cm extra behind the chair. Reserving this space means that you can easily push the chair back to get up, or in an office turn around to reach a credenza or bookshelf behind you. Together with the chair, this means keeping a space 100 cm deep free in front of a table. In other words, 240 cm deep tables would require a 340 cm deep floor space in total. The room behind the chair doesn't need to be dead space, as it can double as the area you need to get to a dresser, filing cabinet, or a bookshelf.

From the history of furniture: Tables And Sideboards Part 1

"In their daily eating this was the custom. The steward, with the servants that were gentlemen of the better rank, sate down at the tables in the hall at the right hand, and the almoner, with the clergy and other servants, sat on the other side. Where there was plenty of all sorts of wholesome food, both for eating and drinking. The daily fragments thereof did suffice to fill the bellies of a great number of poor hungry people, that waited at the gate. And so constant and unfail ing was this great supply at my lord's table, that whosoever came in either at dinner or supper, being not above the degree of a knight, might here be entertained worthy of his quality, either at the steward's or at the almoner's table. And more over it was the Archbishop's command to his servants, that all strangers should be received and treated with all manner of civility and respect, and that their places at the table should be assigned to them according to their dignity and quality, which redounded much to the praise and commendation of the Archbishop. The discourse and conversation at meals was void of all brawling and loud talking; and for the most part con sisted in framing men's manners to religion, or in some such honest and seeming subject. There was a monitor of the hall. And if it happened that any spoke too loud, or concerning things less decent, it was presently hushed by one that cried silence."

"Holinshed's Chronicles" (about 157), which are great sources of information about life at that period in England, Scotland, and Ireland, has this about breakfast:

Our philosophy

We want every one of us to live comfortably even if they only have a small area they call home. We scour the Internet to search among thousands of tables, cabinets, bookshelves, shoe cabinets, beds, armchairs and so on by size, to find just the right one for you to go in that unused corner and turn it into a dressing corner, or to find that extra long bed that is still narrow enough to squeeze through the door. From the kitchen to the living room, don't live next to furniture - choose furniture that lives with you.
