How can I coordinate colours?

Furniture Ferret: If you have the option to choose between different colours for a table that fits your space, it is helpful to know what the effects of the different colours are likely to be. The two main things to consider when it comes to colours is balance and associations. Balance means that the colours should be coordinated in some way, so that the space looks like a unit. This can be achieved by using a colour wheel, and going for colours that are either quite close to each other, or relatively far. Other colour combinations are likely be somewhat jarring because of how our eyes and brains understand colour. Associations with and emotions connected to colours are also important to keep in mind. It is quite probable that these emotions are cultural and learnt, which means that they can be very different in different cultures or just for different people. The associations are even often contradictory, which makes it even more difficult to use them as a guide. Blue is often connected to productivity, but also stability, calmness and even sadness. Green is clearly the colour of nature, and is said to be connected to safety, luck and envy (though in other cultures envy is yellow). Pink is considered to evoke kindness, nurturing, romance and calmness, while it was the choice for boys' and men's clothes over many decades. Red is thought of as the colour of friendship, energy, leadership, desire and anger, which is a very wide range of emotions. But it is clear that in nature, it means danger and importance, so it should be put next to a neutral colour to allow the eye to rest. These associations are so varied that these guides all seem to boil down to just one piece of advice: pause and consider what the colour means for you.

Questions and answers

How do I measure the space to fit a table in?

Measure the width and the depth of the area where you'd like to put a table. The most accurate way is to use a measuring tape. Hold the beginning of the tape down at the edge of the area, and let it run to the other edge. Make sure the tape is parallel to the side of the area, or else you would overestimate the available space. If the distance is larger than what you can stretch to, ask someone else to assist, or split what you need to measure into multiple parts. This can be done by either holding the tape down partway through and continuing running it while letting the first end go, or by marking how far you measured on the floor or wall, and reposition the tape to complete the measurement. If you want to avoid drawing on the floor, you can position a pointy object like a pen there. Don't forget to avoid dead places where the piece of furniture won't be able to go like pipes. Also it may be necessary to take the height of the space and the item into account wherever the ceiling is uneven like in loft rooms.

How can one search for tables using their size?

Finding tables in search engines on the Internet by measurements is not easy as search engines are best at finding words only. Also, when searching for tables to fit a given space, slightly smaller items would also fit. Even if some websites allow searching for tables by measurements, checking many shops at the same time is time-consuming. We scour many shops on the Internet and index thousands of items to allow you to buy the one that is just perfect.

From the history of furniture: Tables and sideboards Part 2

The dining-table, which was in use at this time — that is, about 1650 — and for the next fifty years, is shown in the next figure, No. 5. It is variously known as the "gate-legged " or the hundred legged table, and it was one like this, made of oak, which had a place in the dining-room of William Penn, though his had fewer legs.

About the middle of the eighteenth century there were improvements in the serving-tables, as can be seen in Figure 6; for this has two leaves, which can be pulled out, so that its capacity can be increased. The example shown is a very handsome one, with a carved frieze rail, and two carved rosettes at the top of each leg. The wood is mahogany.

The dining-tables kept pace with the serving ones, and Figure 7 shows one of the same period as Figure 6 and which was called an " extending-table," though what we call an extension-table was not made till about 1800.

Chippendale made some very elegant tables, for side or sewing-tables, with marble tops or those of solid mahogany, and with richly carved frames, very few of wliich found their way over here. What there \Arere seem to have been gradually absorbed by museums, and there is one at Memorial Hall, Philadelphia, which have shown elsewhere, and once in a while you will find one belonging to some rich collector. Our philosophy

We want to allow everyone to live comfortably even if they only own a small space they call home. We scour the Internet to search among thousands of desks, cabinets, bookcases, storage units, beds, sofabeds and so on by size and colour, to find just the right piece to go in that unused corner and turn it into a practical office, or to find that extra long sofa that is still narrow enough to squeeze through the door. From the kitchen to the bathroom, don't just live around furniture - have furniture that lives with you.
