You will need about 30-36 in room either side of the bed as well as at the foot, with the more space corresponding to more relaxed arrangements. In other words, for a 50 in wide bed, you need a 110 in wide floor space. If this is too much, you can save space by pushing the bed against the wall on one side, especially if the bed is only used by one person. This can create a cozy corner, and would reduce the space needed by a 50 in wide bed to about 80 in in width. Equally, it is possible not to have any extra space at the foot of the bed - you can put it flush against the wall, or you can place a cabinet there to save space and further enhance the feeling of a safe, enclosed space.
