How much space do you need in front of a drawer unit?
One needs extra space in front of a chest of drawers in addition to the room occupied by the unit itself. You will likely need enough room to be able to fully extend the drawers, as otherwise getting to files at the bottom end of the drawers can be tricky. Ideally you should also be able to stand in front of the unit, but if not, position the chest of drawers so you can stand at its side and work from there. At Furniture Ferret, our approximate guide is to leave as much space in front of the unit as its depth, so a 30 in deep chest of drawers would need 60 in in total. While drawers may not extend to the full depth of the unit, and it may not be possible to pull them out fully, this is a safe estimate.
