From the history of furniture: Old Pewter Part 5

The old newspapers of Colonial times furnish a good index of what were the manners and customs of the people at that time, and what were the articles in use. By 1777 New York was filled with officers and soldiers, and apparently with a number of light-fingered gentry, as well. There are numberless advertisements of lost articles, stolen goods, and many rewards are offered and "no questions asked." This notice appears in several issues of the " New York Mercury ":

"Stolen out of a room, a small red leather trunk, with several small articles, two razors, a pewter shaving-box with soap."

I have recently heard from the OAAmers of two pewter shaving mugs. In one case the mug has become a re ceptacle for buttons, while in the other it is still intact in its red leather box with all the other fittings.

In Figure 299 are two nice tasting bowls (you rarely find these called porringers in any English list) and two covered boxes. For just what purpose the latter were used it would be hard to tell, unless it was for soap. They are twisted, and so are the pieces in the next Figure (300), which are old and interesting. This twisted effect was seen on very early pieces, particularly candlesticks, and was made about that period which is called, with more or less inaccuracy, " Queen Anne." At any rate haveIseen candlesticks, made about 17, in this twisted:» pattern, and, besides the twist, the objects themselves betray great age. The two salt cellars on either side of the jug are of the form and size common at that period, when a person's rank entitled him to sit above or below the salt.

Questions and answers

How do I measure the space to fit a sideboard in?

Measure both the width and the depth of the space where you'd like to put a sideboard. The easiest way is to use a measuring tape. Hold the start down at the edge of the area, and let it run to the other edge. If the distance is larger than what you can stretch to with your arms, ask someone else to help, or divide what you need to measure up into multiple parts. This can be done by either holding the tape down halfway and continuing running it while letting the first end go, or by marking how far you have measured on the floor or wall, and reposition the tape to complete the measurement. If you would not like to make a mark on your floor, you can position a pointy object like a pair of scissors there. You should avoid dead places where the piece of furniture won't go like pipes. Also don't forget to measure the height of the space wherever the ceiling is uneven like in loft rooms.

How much room is needed in front of a sideboard?

In order for a sideboard to be usable, it requires more space than its size alone. You need to be able to access it and be in front of it to access books and other items stored on a sideboard, and if it has doors, they need to be able to be opened fully. Double doors will require an additional depth of half of the width of the item, while in general, you will need at least 15-24 in in front of a sideboard for access. This means, for example, a sideboard that is 20 in deep needs at least 35 in space. Fortunately, this extra room does not need to be exclusive: access spaces of two or more pieces of furniture can overlap as long as this does not disrupt the flow and lead to people bumping into each other in, for example, an office setting.

Our philosophy

We want everyone to live comfortably even if they only have a small space they call home. We scour the Internet to search among thousands of desks, cabinets, bookcases, shoe cabinets, beds, tables, armchairs and so on by size, to find just the right one to go in that unused corner and turn it into a practical office, or to find that extra long sofa that is still narrow enough to squeeze through the bedroom door. From the kitchen to the bedroom, don't live around furniture - get furniture that lives with you.

Have you heard? We also help customers in many other regions. You can look for 155 cm wide sideboards in Ireland or 155 cm wide sideboards in the UK.
